Met up with Speedy, John, and Albaro for a day of freediving. Vis varied from spot to spot and the water was bordering on hot. We hit some deeper spots early in the day, a ledge in 90' and then several wrecks in 90-110' with a good haul of fish including muttons, hogs, and a big yellow jack that John shot, nice job on that fish man  Albaro brought some special ingredients and turned part of the yellow jack into his version of ceviche on the boat, it was awesome. I had a big dose of bad luck when we were pulling away from one of the deep wrecks... I was taking off my fin while sitting on the back of the boat and it slipped out of my hand and into the water. We dove in after it but couldn't see it in the poor visibility and strong current, so it's in Davy Jones locker (btw, if anyone has a single c4 flap blade in 30 stiffness for sale I will buy it ASAP). Luckily I brought my cressi's and was able to keep diving.
We moved shallow to a spot in 50' to look for big muttons that are known to frequent the area (just ask Oscar). I dove a few times on the ledge and didn't spot anything but the area looked so promising that I kept making dives. My patience was rewarded as on one drop I see a black swimming out from a hole so I'm patiently swimming parallel and lining up a shot from about 12' away. I take a mid-body shot which was solid and put the hurt on the grouper, but the damn flopper didn't open. When I gave the line a tug the spear just came out. So here I am running out of air with my spear on the bottom and the grouper next to it trying to get its senses back. I grabbed at the grouper but he got away so instead I grabbed the spear and swam to the grouper and stuck the spear into his gill plate as hard as I could with the grouper fighting like mad. I had him pinned to the reef and stuck my left hand into his gills and secured my fish. I swam him up after the exhausting dive but was grinning from ear to ear, I guess it's true when everyone says that you earn all your blacks down here. He was just over 32".
We hit some other spots where Speedy hauled in a bunch of hogs, John speared a nice mutton, and Albaro got his own yellow jack. It was a great day on the water, especially the improvised ceviche that really hit the spot, thanks guys! Thanks for taking us out Speedy. :toast: I know some other guys have more pictures from the day, hopefully they will post them.
