Well after years of spearfishing with such great guys and learning so much from all of you I've decided to finally break down and purchase the SUUNTO
D3.
This weekend I was asked several questions about my bottom time or what depth I had found a fish and I just couldn't take the uncertainty any longer !

Not knowing the details of my dives and not knowing if/how I'm improving my times or my depth has been killing me slowly for a year now. I had researched and then did more research and changed my opinion countless times but after much inner turmoil coupled with the aid of Dolphin Scuba I have purchased the Blue D3.
I called into Florida Freedivers and Jim @ www.thespearfishingstore.com first to make every attempt to support my local and amazing Florida retailers. Neither had any available so I made the call to Dolphin.

It's shipped and on the way, Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and recommendations and for answering my questions not once, but multiple times.

Rinaldo

Once you get a dive watch, you cannot dive without one.

It is PargoAmargo, Speareasy or Dan.. Pargo is a fish. Please refrain from further personal attacks :D

Rinaldo, owning one of these contraptions leads to obsessive compulsive behavior underwater and missing fish while you're checking on your depth and surface interval. Other than that they are damn sexy and impress the girls big time, congrats.

I'm honestly just going to use it for telling me how deep I was and how long I was there. I don't need it for much else, But Being able to upload the data to eventually track my gradual progression is what excites me the most. If you ever see me glancing at the watch while I'm at depth please please please give me shit.

I wouldnt bother uploading the data. Your battery dies and it takes forever. I bought the cord and d3 from Leisure Pro and i ended up sending it back. Just my 2 cents.

I didn't understand what all the hoopla was about until I got a D3 for a gift. It's now an integral piece of dive equipment for me. I mainly use it to track my surface intervals. I had no idea how short I was cutting them. What I thought was 2 minutes ended up only being about 45 seconds.

Me too Howard. If I just rely on how I feel, it will be around 45 seconds.

I almost never look at while I'm underwater, but I do look after I surface and see how deep and how long the dive was. If the times are even worse than my norm or are dropping, then it makes me more conscious of trying to relax and think about my breathing.

About the only time I look at it under water is if I feel like I must be very deep and the water is murky, and then I might want to leave the bottom with a bit of extra reserve.

you can buy it for $278.40 new shipped to your door. $200 for a used watch is a bit much.

Dive watch? Who the heck needs a dive watch for spearfishing? Am I missing something? Is there some secret formula that you do which results in a set in stone time for when one must be on the surface?
I dont deny my instinct and when I feel comfortable to go I go and sometime I just go anyhow. Mainly I use instinct and my own body for I cannot rely on any space age wrist ticker to tell me when Im ready.
I only use the watch for strict freediving for PB and to better myself the next dive. Spearfishing isnt about the depth and going deeper so I dont need it. I just to get near the fish to hit it. :corkysm60:

I completely agree with your last statement, but as for the rest, to each his own. Bill hit it on the head. That's exactly how I use my D3. There is no "secret formula". I use some of the info I learned from the PFI course and some of my own personal experience, then adjust while I'm in the water (esp. if I inadvertently pushed myself to the limit on a given drop). I've seen pics of what kind of diving you can do, and you have a method that obviously works well for you. I'm just stating what works for me, and D3 really helps me with my method.

I've got the Suunto Mosquito, which is basically the same watch as the D3 but with a slightly longer sample rate. I think it's 1.5-2 secs. instead of the d3's 1 sec.

Anyways, my main reason for buying it is simply the dive alarm, which alerts you when your dive is too long. If you're distracted fighting a fish or getting deep into some photography many times you forget how long you've been down. The alarm helps you keep within your limits.

Other then that, I used it all during my performance training and it was great just to be able to see my depth while diving.

At least you'll have a reliable dive partner now, but does it do funny Borat impressions? I didn't think so.

You're absolutely correct, However when you'd try and tell me my depth and bottom time while I was under water it got a little awkward and I really couldn't understand a damn thing you'd be saying.

The D3 doesn't have a knack for homosexual innuendos, trust me I checked... I read the instruction manual twice. I miss my better dive buddy but he's off somewhere pretending to play War.
Hurry back.

Homosexual innuendos? This coming from the guy who would mount and rape every single fish he shot? Riiight.

Dude, whenever I come home again it's gonna be on like Donkey Kong! It's getting pretty bad man. There are huge jackrabbits all over base that just hang out when you walk by and only run if you're within 5 ft, so I've begun to collect scrapwood and rubber bands, but I might just order some airmen to make me a speargun in the fabrication shop! Then all I have to do it put on my mask and fins and lie in the grass waiting for one of those furry landfish to hop by!!

I'll ship up one of my spares if you're that desperate. All I ask for is a picture of this so that I can laugh for the rest of my life.
Hurry Home... the water is so warm and clean and the fish, dear God, I swear I think I've heard them actually taunt you and call you by Name.... "David... David"

I hate you.

I've been doing well, not thinking too much about Florida and all, but sometimes, well, sometimes I just curl into a ball and cry myself to sleep. Pause. NOT!
