View Full Version : Ordering a new Wong, need help
MJPHawk 08-20-2007, 11:06 PM I just sent a very expensive e-mail to Daryl Wong, that is probably overdue. I ordered a 55" Hybrid Carbon Fiber Magnum, Semi Enclosed Track. I need help with the details.
Paint - I am leaning toward the blue camo. My only aprehention to this is that it isn't 100% custom. I have entertained the idea of a blue camo design done in Blue and Orange (Go Gators!!!). Comments?
Name - My name is Mike Parr and I can't think of anything very original to do with that. MJPHawk is my initials plus my highschool mascot and the only reason its my screen-name on SB is because I still have the e-mail address from back then. I also am not a golfer which would be the obvious choice. "Shooting Parr" is the best idea I have got yet, but I am honestly leaning toward just a boreing "Mike Parr" at the moment. Any suggestions?
Decal - I love marlin and am probably leaning toward that, but I know I will never shoot a billfish, nor have I ever caught one. A cubera snapper I think would also be really cool, but need to see if Daryl can do that. I have shot one Cubera and it is probably one of my favorite catches to date. Of course other obvious options are hogfish, grouper, cobia, etc. Any suggestions are appreciated.
As an accountant, creativity is not my strong hold. That's where you all come in. I welcome all input. This isn't a purchase that I will be repeating soon, so I would like it to be perfect the first time. The function of the gun itself I have no doubt will be perfect if made by Daryl, its the "design" that I am hoping to get some assistance with.
Big Pig 08-20-2007, 11:34 PM I am probably not the best person to give advice because I view my spearguns as tools and they are all beat up, but if you are a hardcore gator fan the blue/orange camo pattern with a blue handle would look good. Have him burn a gator on the stock and you are set
Killer&Griller 08-21-2007, 10:46 AM Draw your own design and email it to him. That is as personal as it gets. I found pics on the internet that I liked, traced it off of the computer screen, then changed the details a bit to what I wanted it to look like. I am not an artist so a starting point helped. Just a thought. You'll love the gun. I lost the same one about 2 months ago. It was my favorite out of several he has made for me. Good luck with it. For a very small fee, I will give you the last GPS cords for the one I had if you want to save some money.

What did you loose it in the middle of the Atlantic? I am quite sure if the gun was recoverable, you would have gotten it already.
kjflyfish 08-21-2007, 11:32 AM Stick with your name, the blue camo and the cubera, stick with elegance. :D

2 divers went down 10 minutes after me and one sips on air so I new he wouldn't be up for another 35min since he was running on a scooter. We were anchored up with a solid 1 1/2 to 2 knot current and I didn't want to pop the to and not make it back to the boat. Had to ride the anchor rope down so we didn't miss the ledge. One of those safety calls that really hurt the pocketbook if ya know what I mean. We looked for a solid hour and no good. Oh well, save up forever and a day for another. I love that gun. :slap:
I had a cubera on it with the name that I had drawn. The red spot that you see in the pic was from the camera.
gumshoe 08-22-2007, 08:27 PM Craig, If you get another wong, I'm gonna spring for a loop so that you can clip the thing to yourself...or maybe a piece of yarn to tie around your finger - you know "reminder to self...do not drop the $1000+ speargun"
:)
And, to think, I spent 15 minutes digging the shaft from that gun out of the clay after a missed shot for no reason.
MJPHawk 08-22-2007, 10:21 PM Thanks for the replies guys. I think I have decided on the following.
Name: "The Parrfect Weapon" - Plays on my last name
Color: Blue Camo
Decal: Fish Skeleton - doesn't single out any one fish, since I am always targeting something different.
Let me know what you think, I still have time to change my mind. I can't wait till it gets here :bounce:
kjflyfish 08-22-2007, 11:54 PM I think the outline of a great hammerhead would be really cool - especially if it wrapped around the stock a little.
Choke Fish 08-23-2007, 06:49 AM Just think of things you really like and put it on there. It doesnt have to be fish.
Just put things on there that means a lot to you, doesnt take much creativity for that.
joelovesfishin 08-23-2007, 08:17 AM I'm not sure how many people eventually sell their Wongs, but a personalized gun that pertains to you might make it difficult to re-sell. I'm sure no one wants to own a gun that says "Joelovesfishin", unless I become famous or infamous. Perhaps a generic name like "Fish Killa" or "Go Deep", whatever. I'm always thinking ahead...
Speareasy 08-23-2007, 10:11 AM How 'bout this one :D

Enjoy!
Number1StunNer 08-26-2007, 10:23 PM Why don't you choose the GARNET AND GOLD camo paint job?

lol...enough derailing of your thread, just a little friendly rivalry. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Coming from a person who has recently ordered a gun from Daryl here is what I've got:
Talk to Daryl: he was AWESOME when I had questions and was able to email me some decal work that he has done before to give me a better idea for what he can do. I think that your decal design may have a little much going on, but at the least you can ask Daryl and he will be happy to help you through the process. As for personalizing, if you are going to pay that much for the gun, the least you can do is stick your name on it. Get the right gun, Daryl can help ya there too if you have questions, and keep it forever. Don't know if that is going to help, but I recently got Wonderboy a present from there and it turned out phenominally.

Daryl does a great job on his guns and personal engravings. You can resale a Wong if needed(sand it down/camo it), so I wouldn't hold off on engravings.
Killer&Griller 08-30-2007, 02:38 PM And, to think, I spent 15 minutes digging the shaft from that gun out of the clay after a missed shot for no reason.
No, you were shooting the 60" Magnum Hybrid and dug that shaft out, I lost the 55" MG. therefore, it wasn't a wasted 15 minutes after all.
MJPHawk 08-30-2007, 02:52 PM Resale isn't going to be an issue. I have no real incentive to ever sell the gun. I can't upgrade from a Wong Magnum as a line-gun. In addition, I don't usually sell thing. I have another gun that is almost new and hasn't been used in over a year.
Daryl said the engraving I posted above would not be a problem and would be "fun" as he put it. I am going to go with the name "The Parrfect Weapon". It will be painted in blue camo.
Daryl said the stock is laminated and he would be tapering the stock and routing for handles this week. I am pumpped to get it and try it out in the water. Depending on when it gets here I might not be able to dive with it for several weeks because of work . Oh well, I will at a minimum make sure I get some pool time with it.
Thanks everyone for your input. It is greatly appreciated. I will post pictures of the gun when I get it.
