View Full Version : Speargun Camera Mount
kjflyfish 08-21-2007, 09:24 AM Here is the mount I used to film the video I posted in the Southern Atlantic seciton. It is simply a piece of acrylic about 10 inches long, screwed into the gun behind the handle. I used a piece of rubber cut off of my big-enough-for-an-opera-singer Marseillaise belt to act as a cushion and keep the camera snug. "Mad Props" to Wahoo for the design and tool help .
Red Tide 08-21-2007, 10:08 AM That mount is exactly what I came up with for my gun. Great minds think alike:toast:
I have not tried it yet and kind of scrubbed the idea because everybody was saying that the gun would jerk too much when fired.
So much for everybody.
Skinydiver 08-21-2007, 10:11 AM That's nice, and so simple. Who'd a thought. If it would go on my gun I'd make one exactly the same. Thanks for the idea though.

It works great. Let's see the Red Tide roll in.:gun:
wahoo 08-21-2007, 05:33 PM The only improvement it needs is a thumbscrew for the camera mount, so that the camera can be removed easily. This would be handy for removing the camera so you can film the two bull sharks circling your fish for ten minutes while you try to get him loose.
You could also use a wood insert in the gun (wood threads on the outside and machine thread on the inside) and a thumbscrew, so that the whole mount could be removed quickly and easily.
Speareasy 08-21-2007, 09:37 PM Thank you for sharing that, I'll be looking to mount a camera in the future, your way is probably the way I'll do it. I saw in the video that the gun has 4 bands, are they 9/16 or 5/8? Having 4 bands I assume that the gun is ballasted thereby reducing recoil. How is the recoil on that gun and are you concerned that it will crack the plastic of the housing around the single bolt attachment point?

It currently has four 9/16 bands that are starting to weaken - changing out to 3 5/8 soon. The gun is balanced and ballasted, and is fairly beefy for a 53", so recoil is very low - the first shot in the video was one-handed. The acrylic mount is pretty much bomb-proof. Good luck on your project.
stevemc1 08-31-2007, 08:21 PM Very nice, light weight and simple! I take it you have to have lead ballast on the camera housing to make it neutral so it doesnt pull the gun up. I was going to make something like that, and just use the thumb screw from the flash tray, but I was going to make it from aluminum. What thickness acrylic are you using, and has it been tested by someone? I have a sheet of 1/4" clear. My gun is 65" enclosed track and has 2- 22" x 5/8" bands and I shoot a 66" 5/16" spear. It is a real accurate gun and I can shoot it with one hand, as when I made it the bands are aligned and it really doesnt kick up any or back much at all. Just a straight back for an inch if I use 1 hand. Kind of like shooting a 22 cal. rifle, but it will hit hard way out and very accurately. The only ballast on the gun is another spear in a holder. I have a Nikon 4300 with a Fantasea housing. I wont use the lights on the gun. Let me know how it works. Steve.
stevemc1 08-31-2007, 08:25 PM Opps! I saw you already used it. Let me know about the ballast(if any) and how thick the acrylic is.
Gamble 08-31-2007, 08:58 PM Are those holes drilled in your blades??? O--ya I am going to steal your mount idea,, very nice!!!
Seaweed 09-01-2007, 12:26 AM Those are not holes, they are plastic fish eyes used for lures.
kjflyfish 09-01-2007, 11:22 PM Yep, I just put a bunch of stickers on the fins. The camera and mount have no lead ballast, and the gun still sinks perfectly horizontal with the shaft in .
