After some wise council from a good friend along with seeing walls of wahoo just out of range, I decided to build myself a cannon.

The gun is 65", purpleheart and padauk, and shoots an 11/32 Mori shaft and slip tip. Everything is hand-built except for the trigger mechanism. I'll be adding start to finish pictures next.

Looks great! Did you make the metal part of the handle yourself? Does the pushrod come out of the trigger where you made the hole for it or does it stay in there? Any blood on the shaft yet? I have a piece of paduk aging myself...:D

Have you had it in the water yet?

NICE!!!, I love the handle. Can't wait to see the butt pad. :)

The design and the craftsmanship both look great.

Thanks guys, the handle is a sandwich: padauk-aluminum-purpleheart-aluminum-padauk. All pieces were epoxied and pinned.

The handle took many many hours to get to it's final form. Not to toot my own horn, but it looks and feels awesome!

No screws were used in this gun. Everything is mortised and pinned. Stainless loops were used throughout as the line wrap, heinrich tabs and snubber release.

I did manage to get the gun in the water for the Omer Blue Water Open in Hatteras. It wasn't ballasted, and so it was a little too buoyant, but not bad. I have since done a few small mods and I am refinishing all the dings and scratches that I put on it during the tournament. If all goes well, I'll get to try it out next weekend.

Is that a neptonics trigger?

Did you use pins instead of screws/bolts on the trigger mech as well?

kjflyfish

Neptonic Systems mech and yes, I bought a 3/16" stainless rod and made my own full width pins. The stainless loops are 1/8" and the pins for the handle and remote trigger are 5/32".

That thing is awesome looking...and the handle is just plain gorgeous!!! Did you even have to use any lead with those woods?

kjflyfish

Yep, I need lead up front and in the back. Hey, when you guys see the pictures are they really tiny?

I still gotta give props to Griswold for giving me the butt pad material. Thanks a bunch.

Look at that butt! :D

No problem, glad to help. It looks great.

I saw the notch in the trigger for the push rod, but I think you might want to consider a small keeper that spans the push rod slot. Funny things happen with recoil, etc.

Good eye Gris - I used stainless again as a keeper for the pushrod. I just don't have pictures.

kjflyfish, I love that you have the speargun building threads started up so fast. I was thinking that it would take a long while for this part of the forum to get going and was concerend about it since it's one of the topics I'm most interested in.

Building spearguns has become a real passion. I can see how people like Griswold would want to start a buisiness doing it. Keep an eye out for a post on my Dad's gun which I will be doing the finishing touches to tomorrow.

Edit: Dago, let's see your gun when it's finished!

I used a Neptonic Systems mechanism and I built the handle myself. Check out post #10.

I think you should give props to deepdestroyer. We were looking at his custom handle when I talked you into making yours.

Good point - There are a lot of people that allowed us to formulate ideas - Deepdestroyer, Spearotiki, Steve Alexanders, and many more. Thanks all for your pioneering.

Wahoo was absolutely right. I was thinking that it would be more dificult than it's worth, but when I saw your post, I thought that maybe it wouldn't be so hard after all - you know "hey, look, that guy did so I could probably too."

This gun has 5 5/8 bands and manages them quite easily:chuck::BoomSmilie_anim:

It may be a while before I could start work on one for ya.
