I will be in the Cape Cod Area over Labor Day. Is there any good freediving/spearing in the area?

Since I don't visit the cape hardly at all I don't have any advice about the diving out there. Hopefully someone will chime in. Unfortunately you'll probably have better luck in the New England section of Spearboard.

Be carefully, there have been reports of great whites chomping seals off the beach in Chatham. I'd probably avoid that section of the cape.

Where on the Cape will you be staying? Pretty good spearing everywhere, just remember the north shore of the Cape and the national seashore are much colder than the south shore. Wouldn't worry to much about sharks, I have been in the water here for over 35 years and have never seen one, just avoid diving with the seals.

Sremsen,

Thanks for you reply. I am staying in the Orleans area. I know that we can't spear stripers but what fish are we allowed to spear?

Seals in September? Wow I grew up in that basic area and only remember seeing seals in the winter. Glad I move to Florida, the water is much warmer:toast:.

I know I stoped buggin there in 1975 as @ that time laws changed so only residents could get lobster license. All out of state permits were stopped.

heres my pesonal best 13 pound cape cod lobster. Got it 25 fsw 1/4mile off Nausett beach in 1973.

when I first moved to Florida I used to dive the72 degree springs in a bathing suit and could not figure out why people were using wet suits. Sixteen years later I understand.

So I we just purchased our tickets, heading up to Cape Cod around the 9th of August for 11 days. I have been trying to make some phone calls and such to see what I would need to do to be able to get some lobster or even shoot a few fish.

I have not been there diving for a while, but I do not think you can shoot in MA. I think you will need to go to RI for shooting and I can only imagine what it will cost for an out of state license. You may get a break with your military status though.

You can shoot in MA except for Striped Bass. Tautog are the fish of choice, usually found along rocky outcroppings and anywhere else there is shelter for them. Tasty but a little bony.

I am on the southwest shore of the Cape and water temps are low 70's, probably mid-70's by August.

Hi guys,

I've just registered on 'Planet' today (already on spearboard), just to see what it's all about and if someone will be around Cape Cod next week. So I am also interested in what is said here, about spots, regs and other topics.

Very frustrating to only watch the striped swim by and leave lobsters in their holes, as I was particularly hoping to land some around there. Can anyone tell me if I'll be more lucky with the regs the following week, when I'm further up in Maine ?
Meanwhile, I'll pick any advice on good spots and allowed (and interesting) species. Some people seem to be fond of togs but maybe there's something else worth a spearo's attention...?

For information, I'm a French guy living in MD (too far from the waves, to my opinion...) and I'll be in West Yarmouth at first, with a friend of mine visiting me here (another French spearo just settled down... in Portugal). If anybody with a boat is interested in sharing gas, drinks and a nice day, we're in (especially if we head down to RI, as suggested here...).

This will be my first try in northern Atlantic waters (I mean in the US). I hope I'll enjoy it as much as Hatteras (my very first underwater trip in this country) and its cobias and pompanos...
Thank you all in advance for your help.
:)
Phil

I just got back from Cape Cod, you can catch some lobsters there as long as you have the permit to do so. I personally freedove down and nabbed a 6lb bug about 150ft from the beach. I got some info from some surfers telling me about some good sized rocks right near where they surf. So I went and took a look and found one! Only problem was the water was 57 degrees!!! it was flippin COLD!!!! Bayside water is ALOT warmer but the visability is very low and probably not worth trying to shoot.
