View Full Version : Hog hunt to benefit FRA
Keith8h 08-28-2007, 02:30 PM I did this once before on the "other" board and it went over fairly well, so I'm going to do it one more time.
My father and I own a 665 acre ranch about an hour east of Bradenton. The hogs right now are tearing up our pastures. My buddy and I killed 6 this weekend and I don't think we even dented them.
Here is what I'm offering. 24 hours access to the whole 665 acres for two hunters, your choice of morning and afternoon or afternoon, camp out, hunt the next morning. Winner's choice of weapons, guns, muzzleloader, or bows. Kill all the hogs you want, no additional trophy fees. I'll help skin and gut the first two hogs. After that, you're on your own. All Florida game laws need to be followed, but since they are wild hogs on private property, they are not regulated. Deer and turkey hunting is not permitted. Two feeders are currently running more may be added by hunt time.
Hunters must be over 18. I will allow the winners to bring one accompanied minor 12 or over, but the minor must be accompanied at all times and only one weapon between the hunter and the minor.
Scheduling will be flexible, you'll have to work around my schedule and I'll gladly work around yours. My dove field will be ripe about the end of Sept and I know there will be hogs in it, so that would be a good time.
We have a barn and small bunk house on the property. Nothing fancy, but a way to cook a meal and take a hot shower. This is not a commercial hunting operation.
In order to keep the bidding from getting petty, let's say that to be valid, bids must be $20 higher than the previous bid. Let's say we start the bidding now and close it at 5pm Sept 4. Since the time stamps on this board seem to be in Eastern time, we'll go by the post time. To be valid, a post must be stamped BEFORE 5 pm Sept 4.
And finally, the most important detail. EVERY PENNY GOES TO THE FRA. Pay the day of the hunt, preferably in a check to the FRA.
Any questions feel free to ask. If you want a reference, Financial Advis, Bubblejunkie and Fiz were the winners last spring, they can fill you in. You can also search "hog hunt" on the other board and get the reports.
Good luck and bid it up.
JohnnyDinx 08-28-2007, 02:47 PM I'll start the bidding, but know that whatever I bid Chris will outbid me :slap:
$100
Keith8h 08-28-2007, 02:56 PM Maybe so Gene, but just think how much fun it will be to make him pay more than he wants to.:) You also need to remember that he doesn't have the spare cash he used to have. He's a boat owner now.
Thanks for starting it off.
Spearchucker 08-28-2007, 03:37 PM Alright, I have never hunted anything above water before, but what the hell. I trust that Bubblejunkie or Fiz can come along, to show me the ropes.

Salt Creek Slayer 08-29-2007, 07:51 AM When does the bidding end??
Keith8h 08-29-2007, 09:26 AM Holy smokes, this is great.
Bidding ends on Tuesday Sept 4. Bids must have a time stamp BEFORE 5pm Eastern Daylight time.
Due to ya'lls generosity, I willing to up the offer a bit.
I'll include the use of a Gator 4x4 Utility vehicle. I'll also include a meal, your choice of lunch or dinner, depending on how you schedule your hunt, of roast wild pork. For this kind of money, I'll definitely be cranking the feeders up and probably setting up a third and maybe even a fourth feeder.
Need tree stands? NO Problem, I've got 6 or eight and will have them hung in the correct location depending on your weapon choice and the wind direction. Scared of heights? NO Problem, I've got a brand new ground blind I'll set up for you.
Come on now, bid it up. Denny's going to need the money, it's going to be a tough year.
Guys, this is not a commercial hunting operation, it is a really nice place where you will feel welcome and your kill will be memorable. Honestly, I hunted all my life in numerous managment areas and hunt clubs and can say this hunt is totally different. I've had all the lottery and quota hunts, doe tags etc. and none of it really measures up to the experience at keiths ranch. You dont have to worry getting shot by some half retarded inbred redneck trailing 500 emaciated dogs. You dont shoot a hog thats been bayed up(run) by dogs from a swamp buggy for several hours and is begging you to put it out of its misery. I really cant explain it other than to say there is great joy when you can fool a pigs nose and make a kill in a natural setting. These places arent readily avail to the public everyday, this is a rare opportunity and should be bid as such. A place like this is what comes from years of sweat and blood and you cant buy that from a commercial operator. This hunt is worth so much more than any other hog hunt. I would gladly pay twice that to spend and evening and a morning on this little slice of heaven.
Felix B. 08-29-2007, 11:02 AM Keith, that is awesome, thats going to be one a hell of a hunt. thks
Keith8h 08-29-2007, 03:04 PM Hey folks,
For those of you that have heard that wild pork can be a bit gamey tasting, let me tell you something. This spring I castrated 12 young pigs. I notched their ears and clipped their tails so you'll be able to recognize them. Since then, I've killed two for the freezer, but that leaves 10 still at large. They are now about 55 pounds. In a couple of weeks, the acorns will start dropping and they'll put on a bit of fat. Shoot one of these and I can promise he'll be as tender as your momma's love.
I think I'm diving Saturday, but I'll try to hang a game camera at a feeder Saturday evening. I'll pull the chip on Monday and post if I got any good pics, so stay tuned.
Speardivertampa 08-29-2007, 04:06 PM Damn your a great guy Keith!

Salt Creek Slayer 09-02-2007, 12:44 PM Has this thread died. I'm sure we can do better than this for the FRA
Financial Advis 09-02-2007, 03:56 PM Myself, JohnnyDinx, and Fiz went to the property yesterday to check on the hog population for his raffle. We are sorry to say that there are no more hogs. I think there was a massive brucelosis kill off and the earth has taken them to the depths of hell. His property is as barren of a wasteland as if you were on Mars. There was also a massive fire that consumed his housing so there will be no where for you to stay. It is ok not to stay there since the food was mediocre at best to down right awful. Who wants a cold poptart for dinner.
Seriously there were piggys running rampant. I will let JohnyyDinx and Pat tell there story but it was just a hell of a good time.
Keith8h 09-03-2007, 05:00 PM Hey folks, time for a little update.
First off, Salty, this thread hasn't died. I expected a flurry of activity, then a slow period with perhaps another flurry just before close of bidding.
Remember Bids must carry a time stamp BEFORE 5pm 9/04 to be valid.
As I told you last week, the hogs have been destroying our back pasture, so I've issued a declaration of Jihad. None shall be spared.
I had talked to Fiz earlier in the week and he said he would be interested in coming down Saturday night after the dive trip I had scheduled with Fin Advis, JohnnyDinx, and Barney. After trying to get out twice in my little Seacraft and having our butts handed to us on Saturday morning by the Gods of the sea, the dive trip was scrubbed. This left the crew hungry for blood, so we headed inland.
Now Dinx had never hunted anything before in his life, so he and Chris decided to make it a team effort. We started Dinx on the range with a 17 caliber which he handled fine despite a cross eye dominant problem. I then handed him my .270 and he did just as well with that. By now it's 3:30 and I knew the hogs wouldn't be moving for another couple hours, so I figured we had some time to relax. Not so, Chris was ready to go, so I sent him and Dinx off to sit in the woods. About twenty minutes later it started to rain. It didn't let up for at least two hours. I'll bet those guys were wishing they had their masks and regs. I sure was glad that the rifle I loaned Dinx was stainless.
Fiz shows up right on time wanting to stick one with his bow so I set him up on the north feeder in a ground blind. Just before dark, I drove into the back pasture and saw about 8 hogs reeking havoc on my grass. I hauled butt to the feeder to pick up Fiz and we made a mad dash stalk hoping to get a shot before dark. We closed the gap to about 80 yards and settled in for the shot. I had given Pat my favorite little 22/250 and since Dinx had my .270, that left me with my .17 caliber, far too light to do much good. I told Fiz to shoot the big black sow, and I would shoot one of the 40 pound shoats. On three we shot and the next thing I knew, hogs were running everywhere. Now before we shot I had only seen one big black hog, and that's the one I had told him to shoot. As they ran off, I saw a big black one and figured Fiz had missed. I took another couple shots as they ran off, to no obvious effect.
We checked out the woods they ran into and thought we heard a hog thrashing, so we decided to come back after we checked on the other guys.
When we got to the barn, Dinx and Chris both had big goofy grins on their face, so we knew they had some luck. In the back of the Polaris were two fine eating hogs. Dinx had shot a 90 pound gilt right through the shoulder like we had instructed and Chris had killed an excellent eating 55 pound bar hog. That leaves 9 in the woods for those of you scoring at home.
We skinned and quartered their hogs, cooked up some venison steaks and went to look for the hog in the pasture. After checking the fence crossing for blood, we decided to go back and check the spot where they were standing when we shot. Much to our surprise, laying right there was Pat's 130 pound sow, shot right through the head. He hadn't missed after all. Back to the barn for more skinning.
After a brief night's sleep, the four of us were back in the pasture looking for the offenders. We were a bit too early and got too close to the hogs before we saw them. We stopped the vehicles and jumped out with the rifles, only to have the three black hogs run into the woods. As we turned to go back, Chris says "There's a pig, can I shoot it". I didn't see it at first and wanted to make sure he wasn't about to shoot one of my calves before I gave the go ahead. By the time I picked him up in my scope, he was about 100 yards out and headed for the next county. I told Chris to lay to him and his 30/06 roared. I had my 22/250 and let one fly. The hog picked up speed. Dinx couldn't find him in his scope, so he never shot. Fiz wasn't about to be left out of the fun, so he let a couple loose with my .17 . When the hog was about 150 yards out and at full run, both Chris and I shot again. When I got the third round chambered and my scope lined up, I couldn't find the hog. He still had about 50 yards to cover before he made the woods, so I figured the second salvo had put him down. Sure enough, we walked up to a 160 pound boar.
Back to the barn for more skinning.
Sunday night the rain kept us out of the pasture, but there was plenty of fresh rooting this morning.
With the exception of the last boar, each of these hogs came out of a group of pigs, so don't worry, we're not running out. Once the hunt date is set, I'll ease up a bit on the Jihad, and crank the feeders up, so there'll be plenty of pigs.
And now for the pics.
First is JohnnyDinx and Fiz with their fine eaters. Have you ever seen a goofier grin than the one on Dinx?
Second is Fiz with his sow. Open your eyes next time Pat.
Third is Fin Advis with the boar.
Marcus 09-03-2007, 07:05 PM Sweet report! Congrats guys.
JohnnyDinx 09-03-2007, 08:38 PM The adventure was exactly as Keith described. Having never hunted before and not knowing what to expect, I had a phenomenal time and the pig was just a bonus. I have no idea what the going rate for a hog hunt is, but from first hand experience I can honestly say that you could not put a price tag on the weekend I just had. I'm sure it is obvious from the shit eating grin on my face in the picture above, but I think I can honestly say that it was a hell of good time for everyone. Keith is not only a good guy, but is a tremendous host. What he is offering here is huge to the winner; not only will this benefit the FRA, but the winner will get the opportunity to meet a great guy and experience true southern hospitality. Oh and you'll get to shoot at wild hogs too!
Sitting at home today, recovering from the a 4 hour sleep night, itching at the hundreds of mosquito bites and dozens of fire ant stings would I do it again??? Pig or no pig.......... ABSOLUTELY!!!!! This for me, was an experience of a lifetime. A big thanks to Keith and Chris for the invite, I'll never forget this weekend! :yay:
Marcus 09-03-2007, 09:18 PM Very cool, Gene.

Keith8h 09-04-2007, 01:29 PM OK folks, here is my final post before the end of bidding in less than 5 hours.
I confiscated one of the hams off of Chris's 55 pound bar to use for the roast pork dinner, so we're all set there.
I plant a 5 acre dove field every year that was absolutely leveled by the hogs last year in the last week in September. I counted 16 head in there one evening. That field is absolutely beautiful right now and is just starting to form seed heads. In two weeks, they'll be ripe and the hogs should be in there thick. This field is a full mile away from the feeders, so I think it will be a completely seperate group of hogs.
If we don't get the hunt done in Sept, dove season opens October 6 and runs for about 6 weeks. Last year we had over 1000 dove come into our field opening weekend. If you have any interest in wingshooting, I'll include a dove hunt in the package. This is a completely legal NON BAITED dove shoot. Shooting dove will require a hunting license and migratory bird stamp. You must be legal since one of the fellows I routinely invite is our local game warden. The nice thing about the dove shoot is that it's usually best between 3pm and 5 pm, which leaves plenty of daylight to get back into the woods to kill a hog.
Don't want to bid because you've never hunted? Don't worry about it, we'll take care of you. I've got guns you can borrow. I'll spend some time on the range getting you comfortable with the guns and teach you about shot selection and placement. Heck, I'll even sit in the stand with you and video or coach if you want. Trust me, if Gene can get it done with Chris's coaching, anybody can get it done.
I'll also throw in cutting and wrapping of your first two hogs. When you leave, the meat will be ready for the freezer and the trimmings will be seasoned and ground into sausage.
That's about all I've got, now bid it up. Remember, EVERY PENNY TO THE FRA.

I know Chris cooked the ribs off that little bar last night and I guess he just can't get enough. Thanks to all that bid, we'll be sure to put up a post with the report.
As far as a shotgun Chris, you've got the wrong attitude. You don't HAVE to buy a shotgun, you GET to buy one.

Denny 09-05-2007, 03:02 PM Keith-
On behalf of every member, supporter and beneficiary of the FRA:
THANK YOU!
:allhail:
Keith8h 09-05-2007, 03:05 PM Denny,
No thanks to me are necessary. The thanks go to you, for fighting the good fight, and to Chris for coming up with the $$$.:smnotworthy:
Denny 09-05-2007, 03:26 PM Chris-
I can't begin to thank you enough for your continued, generous support of the FRA. You have personally contributed, to my recollection, more than a couple thousand dollars over the years.
You all need to thank Chris for his support. Without it, I'd be a memory.
THANK YOU, CHRIS!
