View Full Version : New Discovery of fish
Choke Fish 09-02-2007, 10:11 AM So I had the chace to get out to another island that I havent been to. Long story short I ended up shooting a fish no one has ever seen other than some of us very, very, few divers. Ya no one at the sushi shop new what it was. Anyone know? I took him out with my 100cm Rabi just like all the fish this weekend. I had to save my big gun for tomorrow :D
Here is this wierd looking fish which seems to like deep holes and is very skiddish. I gave him the slip though.
Oh ya, also there was some goats and it crossed my mind to take one out :D
I was a little goofy with that one pic but in no way did I mean disrespect for the fish :fish:
ahhhh paradise!!!
CheekyBastard 09-02-2007, 10:22 AM Who is that chubby guy all the way on the left? :)
2fishin2 09-03-2007, 05:36 AM Did some research in my fish books and have solved the mystery. Fish is called a "Scribbled snapper," Lutjanus rivulatus, length to 63.7 cm (25.1 in) weight to 11kg (24.3 lb) South from Australia north to Okinawa. Found it also in a Japanese fish book but strangely enough not in my Okinawa book. Anyways nice catch! :yay:
CheekyBastard 09-03-2007, 06:51 AM Dang thats some good research. We thought it might be a record but im sure it wasn't 27lbs. http://www.iusarecords.com/world_record_list.php
Choke Fish 09-03-2007, 07:01 AM TOLD YOU ROB! Your all about records :D J/K Well its a rare fish here I guess. Thanks for the name!!
Skinydiver 09-03-2007, 09:16 AM I saw a couple of these this weekends. Yesterday in particular I was swimming up on a somewhat large crevasse that the top of was near the surface, and the bottom was in about 30 feet or so. I dropped down on the bottom of the crevasse to see some Taman that were everywhere. One of these big dudes swam out of one of the holes in the side of the crevasse. I was like 15 feet from him, and by the time I got my 90cm turned around he got flustered, and holed up. No shot on him at all, but he looked huge!! Had I taken a shot on him I'm sure I would have had a hell of a time getting him up with my 90 no reel. But it definitely had the distinct yellow fins, and those DSL's that BS likes so much. Nice catch dude!! My catch will be up shortly.

They are like an all white fish with very yellow fins on them. They dont really have DSLs and are more of a snapper. But if you saw one then good on you!!!!! I shot mine with my single band 100cm gun with a single wrap no reel. It was quite the challenge and it was a fun time getting him out of his deep hole.
Later!
Speareasy 09-03-2007, 04:35 PM Very nice capture. Looks somewhat like what in the Mediterranean they call a Denton or over here a big ass Porgy :D
What diameter is the shaft of your 100cm Rabi?
That is a very nice fish. Great pictures as well:smthumbup:
Skinydiver 09-03-2007, 07:15 PM Nice. They're DSL's may be small as compared to some but when their mouth is open eating some food they look pretty huge. The 10# Ulua I shot was a pretty tough match when it comes to the fight. Best fight I've had yet. Good times. That thing was swimming me around in circles at the surface. :corkysm60:It was crazy.
Dude, I shot cww180's Rabi single band 100 and that thing is pretty sweet. I'm ordering my new gun this week. I guess the Venom is out of the question now.

Choke Fish 09-04-2007, 04:38 AM Very nice capture. Looks somewhat like what in the Mediterranean they call a Denton or over here a big ass Porgy :D
What diameter is the shaft of your 100cm Rabi?
7mm shaft. I love the gun!
Speareasy 09-04-2007, 09:38 AM What's your bigger gun?
Choke Fish 09-04-2007, 09:59 AM 140cm Rabitech Apex and my trophy shooter is a 60" Posiedonsub Carbon barrel, semi enclosed track, hybrid. I think I shot that gun 3 times and landed one fish so far. Ya it collects a lot of dust but will come in handy when that 200lb Doggie comes my way again.
Choke Fish 09-04-2007, 10:02 AM Who is that chubby guy all the way on the left? :)
That would be Grandpa Diver :birthday: Probably the best darn spearo I have seen in the water.
What I want to know is whos the guy playing pocket pool next to me?
Speareasy 09-04-2007, 10:13 AM So you prefer the Rabi to the Aimrite? If I remember correctly that's what you had. What does the 100 actually translate into, the total length from muzzle to butt or the pipe length between the muzzle and handle?
The Poseidonsub is quite the canon.
http://home.comcast.net/~sveros/euroti111.jpg
Choke Fish 09-04-2007, 11:08 AM The gun is kinda like that minus that huge rear. Rabi over aimrite? Well both are great! Its just your personal preference.

MerMan 09-04-2007, 12:21 PM ha ha i shot those fish before in oki, at the waterfall place, anyways man your having too much fun without me. now i feel left out:mad::mad:

Earbody misses your company! I got some hats to complete your collection and I was going to send em to you there. Is that ok?
MerMan 09-06-2007, 06:15 AM Yeah man, i need those cool hats and some mo shirts. I like them red ones nigga, Man you guys are hitting up all the crazy islands, at least wait for me for that one magical spot for me. I have dreams at nights about going back there, i want to do at least a week there. It's crazy how these people came out of nowhere, where did they come from? First it was just us, now it seems like everybody is spearfishing. anyways don't forget i have a pool here to train at, so i won't be rusty when i get home.
CheekyBastard 09-06-2007, 06:18 AM Hey P where you at anyways? Sounds a little better than your last trip there.
Skinydiver 09-06-2007, 06:42 AM I think I know where you're at. If there's a pool. I don't know many bases out there that have them. Is that thing still full of all kinds of skin oils? I went to the pool out there once on "Marine Day" and the water was pretty nasty. Looked like someone spilled oil in the pool or something. haha It was nice none the less.

Dood "P" we dont forget! Rob was talking about Thanksgiving to go up there but once Amy heard that news Rob tucked his tail and headed for the dog house. :p I think end of may would be the best time as that was the time when Rob and I saw all the action. It was Memorial day weekend.
We are merely scouting islands till your return. So far we have hit 2. We have one in mind that takes about an hour to get there by plane. Its a remote island out in the pacific and I think there is only a handful of people there. More deserted than shins island!
So far we have found a few sweet spots on Oki, some of which you already know like the the spot I shot the 80lb Napolean, the spot we chased the heards of coral trout, and a spot you havent been to. The one where I shot all those fish, the cuda, the Nap, Sweet lips, and rainbow runner.
Dont worry about the B/W trips your not missing much. Its just jump in let the current take you and all you see is Ono, Mahi, and some Rianbow Runner. If you lucky some very small Ahi will come up. Every dive you just hope for something like a bill fish to come around.
But ya, we are pretty much expanding. Every weekend is some new trip or island, its awesome!!! Rob also has one island we can Kayak too. WE have found out that a 2 man kayak gets you places that further a lot faster and easier.
Dont worry, when you get back it will be peack seaon! We should be some b/w hunting fools then as we are told thats the best time for the bigger mahi and ono.
Yup, gotcha the black and the red cap! I thaught you had all the shirts? Oh to fill you in on gear. Dont order anything w/o talking to me. I know a guy you should talk to first. Ok so here it is, Rob got a 140 RA and I got a 120 single band RA. Both are Aluminum but Skinner got his first carbon 120 RA. I also have ordered some custom fiberglass fins from some freediver guy. Other than that there isnt anything new.
later
Gunny 09-08-2007, 12:52 PM That poseidon is bad ass
MerMan 09-08-2007, 02:44 PM damn niggas every body gots the rob allen now, i'm happy with mine. but i still want that riffe euro for when i get back. that big rob allen float has to get tested on, man your making cum in me pants with all that ono and mahi. yoshi must be very happy, i can't wait to get home now and get back in the water. yup now i want to just get to shins and shoot that massive ulua and the big ol dogtooth tuna, and that napolean is going to get it too! the villagers should remember the YAKUZA man! well since i will be living on mc t now, i guess i will have to pound ikea island more when i get home, i'm going to get me a four wheelin machine. well you and rob do some scoutin for me, hell yeah the keremas sounds good, let's do that. i want some carbon fins, what deal does that guy take. i gots pretty much everything else, maybe a 160 rob allen, i'll shoot everything above the water.
Choke Fish 09-08-2007, 08:17 PM damn niggas every body gots the rob allen now, i'm happy with mine. but i still want that riffe euro for when i get back. that big rob allen float has to get tested on, man your making cum in me pants with all that ono and mahi. yoshi must be very happy, i can't wait to get home now and get back in the water. yup now i want to just get to shins and shoot that massive ulua and the big ol dogtooth tuna, and that napolean is going to get it too! the villagers should remember the YAKUZA man! well since i will be living on mc t now, i guess i will have to pound ikea island more when i get home, i'm going to get me a four wheelin machine. well you and rob do some scoutin for me, hell yeah the keremas sounds good, let's do that. i want some carbon fins, what deal does that guy take. i gots pretty much everything else, maybe a 160 rob allen, i'll shoot everything above the water.
We have found some descent places. What I would really like to hit is one of those big camo groupers. Paul Smith just shot a 25lber and the thing is freakin ugly! I have only seen them when diving with you around our spot where we chased all those coral trout and that time you kept saying you saw em up north. Those things are loud in the water. Youll be cruising and all of sudden you feel a thunder in your chest, next thing you know you see this massive thing flying over the reef. They kinda look like goliaths.
Ya I was going to get another Rabi but the guy didnt have any and Im tired of spending money. Im kinda stuck on the taking down of fish with the most ghetto equipment possible. I shot that big snapper with my 100 single band and the shaft barely went in him. Its fun being the underdog, its more rewarding.
So I have transfered to single banded gun unless Im going after big fish like tuna, Naps, and palegics. So I needed a longer gun and I just couldnt pass up the opportunity for a RA though I wanted a green handle I couldnt find anyone just selling one or one with the length I wanted. When I get my RA ill probably customize it and change it up a lot.
Did I tell you I shot a 50lb Ulua or bigger but it cut my mono and took my shaft? We have found a few places with big ulua.
Next weekend might be the sweet spot so I shall keep you posted.
I think Jim would give you the best offer on the net thats for sure.
Here is what we had at Yoshis.
2 Kamikazee Boats w/extra sushi
2 Fried Geso
1 fried rice
1 yakisoba
4 fried Mahi collar
2 beers
water
There was like 4 parties waiting to be seated. We walked in and sat down. Everyone was like WTF???? I had 2 cases of beer to refill my stock as well. Then we were served pretty fast for as packed as it was.
Choke Fish 09-08-2007, 08:20 PM Here is that toad Paul shot.
He also shot one of those oval parrot fish and he is putting that in for a record @ 10.5lbs
So "P" you need to get back and shoot those big fish again and actually submit them this time :D

CheekyBastard 09-08-2007, 08:20 PM Hell yeah im still full! Kev no diving today? I might go to the woodshop today and glue up a larger gun stock. I want to make a 60" bluewater gun.

Well they might still go out. Weather is too rough for that small boat. So we might go out later. Paul asked me to to go out but I had this planned already.
CheekyBastard 09-08-2007, 08:23 PM Heres that grouper paul got. I can never get my hands on these things.
Choke Fish 09-08-2007, 08:25 PM Heres that grouper paul got. I can never get my hands on these things.
That thing is hidious!!!!!!!
Doood those things in the water... OMG its crazy! You wouldnt expect such a massive thing to move so fast and put thunder in the water.
joelovesfishin 09-08-2007, 09:30 PM Heres that grouper paul got. I can never get my hands on these things.
Nice Grouper. Those things get HUGE around here.
cww180 09-29-2007, 08:29 AM Grapevine has that Paul shot a 50lb grouper today!
Leviathan 09-29-2007, 08:31 AM What? Is Paul some sort of GOD to you? Geeze its only 50lbs.
cww180 09-29-2007, 08:37 AM No he is not a god to me, but a 50lb grouper is a nice fish. I don't think I ever commented on what kind of a diver he was.
Leviathan 09-29-2007, 08:44 AM All I hear is Paul this Paul that. Why dont you, instead of bragging about Paul go out and make something of yourself and be the one who shoots the big fish you crave?
cww180 09-29-2007, 08:50 AM I do every chance I get and If I get it, I will post about it. I was just sharing some info, not jocking or d#$% riding. I went up north today but nothing great to report just some regular fish it was a blast though.
Leviathan 09-29-2007, 08:53 AM NO hard feelings. Glad your not like some who let a forum board get to them.
Up north is a big area... NW? NE? Vis? Current? Tide? Moon phase? There are more but knowing some of these help increase your big fish catches.
MerMan 09-29-2007, 11:36 AM man i like this guy, i remember meeting paul smith once. what a complete tool! We went to visit him at his place and he ignore us, to keep playing dungeons and dragons. Here is a bunch of divers who came to meet you, and he blew us off. I'll kick his ass on land and sea. he's only about 125 lbs you know, but for all it's worth he spearfishes for the wrong reason. I do it because i'm hungry nigga.
Brownsuit 09-29-2007, 11:41 AM PAUL SMITH IS A WARRIOR. :2gunsfiring_v1::fish:
cww180 09-29-2007, 08:47 PM We took off from Sesoko island and headed for Minajima in a small inflatable boat from a beach that we thought was closed at about 7:45. We started to back at around 2:15 right in the middle of low tide Sesoko has a reef break surrounding it so we had to exit the boat and lift/pull it to avoid pucturing it. When we arrived at the beach the shore was full of mainland tourist.
blueh2oboy 09-30-2007, 01:36 AM Fun fish to hunt. We find them throughout the Pacific from the Marianas to Okinawa south to Indo and the Indian Ocean and all the way to Fiji and Samoa. I put a clip up for you guys shooting one in Indo. They love big holes and sometimes are in schools of 10-30 fish.
Thick in Australia and Indonesia.
Good shot man. They are fish bad ass fish and fun to hunt.

Choke Fish 09-30-2007, 04:49 AM Thanks Cam! Ya man the japanese people here were like uh what the hell is that? I shot it in front of a very big hole in some ripping current. Its was fun to shoot especially with the set up I had. Found out it was from my bud in hawaii. Also saw it on the record board and that one is a beast!

Hey, Aquaman, your animated video is impressive. You must have "hunted" long and hard for that one on youtube. Got any pics of yourself with a fish?

In retrospect it was pretty funny but that dude/you were on my nerves. :FIREdevil:
:fish:
schlegs 10-02-2007, 10:43 AM That was good. Let it be known, BS, that Aquaman got me to join the board. I was thinking: "who is this freakin' j**rkoff??" My mission was going to be to call Aquaman to the mat...:2gunsfiring_v1:
Choke Fish 10-02-2007, 11:21 AM If you want the honest truth, I became aquaman to get this section hopping again. I mean before aquaman no one spoke a word hardly and look now. We have all these awesome new divers and everyone is talking again. :yay:
I have braught all of you together again! You can thank me later. Im glad to see how tight of a community we have here. I hope to see you guys at this tourney.
As Aquaman I tried not to be too negative, too hurtful, or anything like that. Sorry if anyone was offended but take it up with aquaman. Like the vid says, its only him and Robin :p
Choke Fish 10-03-2007, 12:56 AM Here's a pic taken last Sat - hope you don't mind, Paul...

That thing looks like a goliath grouper. Does anyone have the name for this fish? I know some named it mottled but looking at pics of that kind of grouper it doesnt look close.
Skinydiver 10-03-2007, 02:15 AM That's crazy that Aquaman actually did some good. All he did was piss me off. Not too bad. I didn't think anyone could be that arrogant. Funny shit.
Choke Fish 10-03-2007, 04:19 AM Ya well its just as bad not to voice your opinions about something or someone and just hide behind keeping your mouth shut becuase you want everyone to be your friend. I have more respect for people who speak thier mind. Like that day you said you would punch me in the face. I responded by saying I would drop kick you in the dick if you laid a hand on me. :D
Anyhow if one doesnt sugar coat everything and gives everything striaght in thier opinion, its easier for me to be friends with and trust them. :birthday:
Jabroney 10-03-2007, 05:22 AM I actually DO miss aquaman, he was like seasoning on the steak dinner...spiced things up a bit, you know? It almost turned into a Jerry Springer show in here!

I forget the scientific name, but the research biologist who identified it for me called it a Brown-marbled Grouper. I have the scientific name on my work email, but won't be back to work until next Wednesday. I leave for Osaka in the morning.

I think I remember you saying "OK...OK..... just don't drop kick me in the dick!!!" Something like that.:D
I'm down for speaking my mind and having others do the same, and I can't stand someone who can't take a little humor. I also hate when people have a big mouth on a forum. There is no such thing as a tough guy when someone is sitting in front of a computer acting like they are a tough guy. I also don't like to see people hurling pointless arguments at people for no real good reason and to no end result other than to "spin their wheels".

blueh2oboy 10-05-2007, 08:09 PM Aussies call them Flowery cod and they get big as hell. Over 100lbs. There are a few similar types of Cod/grouper that look like that in the pacific and Indian ocean that get 200+ and all look similar. That is a F'ing good one Paulina has though.

Paulina sure had an epic adventure that day.
