I might be in Nags Head for a couple of days in the beginning of Oct. and was wondering if I should bring my gear. I'll be meeting the family there so getting out on a boat won't be an option unless someone wants a boat b!tch for the day:whistle: Are there any decent spots closer to shore I could freedive to? If I do decide to bring gear what size gun should I bring? I've got a RA 110, Sporasub 90 & 115, and a 55 inch hybrid with reel. Thanks for all the info.

Your best bet would be to hit the "Triangle Wreck" or the USS HURON.
The "Triangle Wreck" actually consists of three parts from two shipwrecks: the stern of the freighter KYZIKOS, the entire hulk of the freighter CARL GERHARD, and the bow of the KYZIKOS, forming the three legs of a triangle. The bow of the KYZIKOS and CARL GERHARD lie in about 15 feet of water; the stern section lies in 20 feet of water. Nothing remains above water to mark the site although at low tide the surface is within inches of the top of the stern section. Most easily discernible in the stern section of the KYZIKOS is the huge quadruple expansion engine. Sand continuously covers and uncovers this site depending on the season and the intensity of storms, therefore the wreck's appearance constantly changes. Visibility is generally better at this site than at the further south USS HURON. Best dove at high tide after a period of little wind, divers can see scattered hull plates and other wreckage. The site is accessible via a beach road; divers can walk south down the beach approximately 600 feet, until in line with the Kill Devil Hills water tower. Swimming 600 feet offshore should place one over wreckage which many times is visible from the surface as sections rise to within 5 feet of it. Tautog, sea bass, bluefish, and copious amounts of mussels can be found amongst the wreckage.
The USS HURON is a wreck off Nags Head that might be productive, and is typically buoyed during the summer.

Also note the tug EXPLORER which is inline with the end of the pier.
There are some other local wrecks, but the "Triangle Wreck" is probably your best bet.

The Triangle is marked with a buoy and dive flag. It is easiest to get to from the public beach access on 2nd Street in KDH. Definitely pick the right day - I would say that good vis is the exception rather than the norm.

It seems the family trip has been cancelled due to a family illness but thank you for all the help and info.
