Thats the nicest JBL i believe i've ever seen! Ken (builder of deathsticks) told me that a lot of people bring him RA's and MARES reels to install on there guns.. This could be a quincidence, however, doubt it.... My 2 cents

What's wrong with the JBL reels? They're built tough, but have a large profile.
They are much stronger than most of the smaller rail gun composite reels. The Riffe is one of the strongest sold! But expensive. Get what you pay for when it comes to reels.

Many people who have reels use the reels incorrectly. Speargun reels are really not designed to fight fish like normal fishing reels. They are simply there to give a freediver time to go up and get air and be able to fight the fish from top. At least that is the way I see it. I don't think you should allow a lot of pressure on the reel connectors. Even with the Riffe reel I can easily see a big fish tear them off if you allowed the fish to apply a lot of pressure.

Of course you don't use a reel and it's so very small handle to reel in fish. The problem is that a big fish will spool out a small reel or fry it if it isn't made for that kind of power. I've had plenty of customers and friends over the past 20 some odd years learn that the hard way. I couldn't begin to tell you how many leather gloves my reel lines have burned through!
The key when buying ANY spearing equipment is simple....the fish that you've been hoping and dreaming about is finally in front of you, and after the shot - if you don't stone it, the fish WILL find the weakest link in your gear and crush all your hard work and diving efforts. Plan your gear for the strongest fish you may encounter not the average size fish. Plus, it is surely more ethical to secure the fish and not injure and then lose a fish due to undersized or lower quality gear.
I don't mean to sound like an A_ shole. But I read too often from divers on the forums about the fish they shot and got away, and shot and got away, and most of the time, the fish broke off because of cheap gear (the weak link) and shooting, wounding and leaving a fish just isn't right.
