Cool, I always make them 5/16th unless someone specifically says they want 6mm for a spear pole or something.
BluewaterFever 07-22-2007, 10:22 PM Have tried several other ppd before but not with the results I got today!;) :DCapt Randy ordered a few of these PPD and I was the lucky enough to try one out. WOW, poor little trigger fish is all I can say. Didn't have to worry about stringing him through the mouth so he wouldn't bite me.:p Hope the tax man doesn't come pay a visit or else...........
well worth the $$$$ Thanks for a great product. KP

Poor little trigger? Are you crazy man those things can inflict pain and severe discomfort if the are allowed to roam free about the ocean. Good job getting him in the ice box without injury. LOL Glad to see they worked well for you.
Captrandy 07-23-2007, 09:50 AM I was lucky enough to be recruited as observer for our testing of these PPD products. And after a thorough review of hundreds of hours of video, thousands of pages of data and several rum and cokes I have determined these PPD's are...KICK ASS! If anybody is looking for a PPD, I strongly suggest giving these a try.

Thanks for the feed back on them guys! Good or bad I want to hear it so if me or Tanks have over looked something that is a deal breaker I want to know.
hogsniper 07-24-2007, 09:07 AM BTW everyone, Shaftslinger has generously donated several PPD's to the fight for diver's rights. They will be donated to the FRA to be sold or raffled. Thanks Shaftslinger. You are always a welcome part of this community.

thanks
firefyterx 08-06-2007, 12:31 AM Which one packs the most punch the 357 or the 223. Do you make any in .44mag
shaftslinger 08-06-2007, 03:02 PM Well truthfully i would have to guess on the power and would say .223. However that being said I use the .357 because I have never had anything not respond well to them :). Also, the .357 are easier to reload since you can use your spearshaft or stringer to push the spent casing out. The .223 you will need something smaller in diameter to extract the casings.
reefmespla 08-07-2007, 11:31 AM Received my two yesterday. Thanks for the fast service and they look great, can't wait to try them out.
Jeremy
Sasquatch 08-07-2007, 01:55 PM I've bought several of these from you- one thing I'm concerned about is that the raw aluminum is getting eaten up when I go diving.
Do you have care-suggestions? Any plans for it in stainless or hard-anodized?
shaftslinger 08-07-2007, 06:10 PM They last a very long time if you just take them apart and rinse them in freshwater everytime you come back from diving. Stainless would be very expensive for me to make them out of and anodizing is expensive since I deal in small quantities.
I will look into anodizing later on but for now thats all I have. you can coat them in parafin wax if your worried about corrosion but I would just say try them out and keep them washed off at the end of diving days.
Red Tide 08-07-2007, 10:49 PM 9/32, 9/32, 9/32... you will be making 9/32 very soon, very soon. When you wake up you will start making PPDs to accept 9/32 shaft and the world will be a better place. When I slap my head you will wake up:slap::slap::slap:

You can anodize pretty easily yourself. Check out this link....
http://homepages.udayton.edu/~jacobsnj/anodize.htm
There is also a couple products made for aluminum wheels to protect them from salt corrosion that you could try as well.
b_bates 08-08-2007, 11:51 AM i saw these last night, now i need to get one for myself, i rinse mine out thoroughly after each use, and i have a ar-15 223 chamber cleaning bronze brush i use to clean and scrub mine with, it works great

catfish 08-10-2007, 05:08 PM Dont worry about corosion. They are only $15 . Just buy some more. Do you think the fish gives a hoot if some sob shot him with a crusty power head.

No, but I'm more worried about them blowing up sideways rather than into the fish.

Rinaldo 08-11-2007, 01:43 AM Anyone have a video of someone using a PPD?
Speareasy 08-11-2007, 02:09 AM I've been wanting to make a video of my PH going off for a while now. If I can get one of a big dangerous shark (not a nurse shark) getting blasted I think I could sell a ton and be financially independent :D
Dago, what is anodizing actually? How much protection does it really offer? I have a JBL polespear that is anodized to the golden color and wherever there's a small nick the aluminum shows through and corrosion sets in. Is this the same kind of anodizing you're talking about?

As I understand it, anodizing is the process by which aluminum oxide is pulled out of the metal and allowed to form a protective coating around it. It is also porous enough before it anneals to allow impregnation with dyes.
Sasquatch 08-11-2007, 07:42 AM You want hard anodizing- much tougher coating- but anything is better than the raw aluminum on the inside of them. I'll try the wax thing.

It is an electrochemical process that thickens and toughens the naturally occurring protective oxide. The resulting finish, depending on the process, is the second hardest substance known to man, second only to the diamond. The anodic coating is part of the metal, but has a porous structure which allows secondary infusions, (i.e. organic and inorganic coloring, lubricity aids, etc.)
Here is a pic of red anodizing on a ppd.

That my friend sounds Great! Now I just have to find the time to make 100 of them in between all these orders lol.
As far as 9/32 shaft size and 30/06 caliber Its going to be at least 2 weeks before I have any time to work on these types.
:whip:
Speareasy 08-11-2007, 12:07 PM Dago, that color is purdy! Does anodizing occur inside the PH as well as the outside? Does it need to be turned/changed positon for anodizing to happen evenly to all surfaces? Does it change the diameter of the inside hole/barrel?

No change in size at all.
Yes the process is on all surfaces.
There are sometimes "Holding" marks but are not very noticable and usually on the inside if possible.
Dago.
shaftslinger 08-13-2007, 08:26 PM All orders have been shipped as of today. If you ordered within the last week it should get to you by Friday or so. If it does not let me know.

The problem Im having with getting a 9/32 model out is I cant find the right size ID tubing with the same characteristics of the stuff I use now. If I can find some making the ppds with them is no biggie.

Speareasy 09-18-2007, 11:39 PM Shaftslinger, whatever your reasons are to not offer the PH anymore, I hope they are not too serious and that you are well.

shaftslinger 09-20-2007, 09:37 AM I guess I should have elaborated a bit on the first post. Im in the early stages of a divorce and have moved out so I have no lathe to work on at the moment. I hope to be back up and running in the next month or so. Nothing wrong with the ones I have sold so dont worry bout that. I just have to get my lathe out of the shop at my old house and get it set up elsewhere.
dive4food 09-21-2007, 01:27 PM Best of luck. Hope everything works out well.
keyone 09-22-2007, 07:32 PM Shaftslinger,
You"ll need the "best of luck" in a divorce. But If you do get your lath back, I need 3 .357 ppd. 1 to use, 1 for a buddy and 1 spare for me. Also if you want some divorce info many here including myself would be happy to help. Keyone
Teh Wicked 09-24-2007, 08:09 AM Good luck on the big D, I have been through one...They suck and are really stressful. Hang in there and let us know when your back up and running!
shaftslinger 11-08-2007, 06:56 PM Thanks for all the kind words. Everything is going pretty well so far. Im back up and running so If you need ppd's just send me the cash via paypal or check and I'll get them out to you.
Teh Wicked 11-08-2007, 08:48 PM Quick question, are these 1 time use or multiple use?
shaftslinger 11-09-2007, 05:35 AM Multiple use. You just reload them and go again. They are quite simple just pull out the tubing drop the empty shell out and drop another shell in. Then put the tubing in slip it back over your speartip and your ready to go.
Killer&Griller 11-11-2007, 08:33 PM Have you considered making any in a 270 cal? Did you ever start making the 30-06 cal? Also wondering if you do any screw on tips or are they all slip on?

I don't think there would be any difference in performance between a .30 06 and a .270 Power-head.

I only make slip ons and as far as the calibers go I only make .223 and .357.
Teh Wicked 11-13-2007, 08:35 PM Sending payment for one now...
Still undecided on which caliber I want though...I already got a 30-06, but a smaller caliber would be nice to have as well.
Speargun 11-14-2007, 12:01 PM 7.62x54R ?
Teh Wicked 11-19-2007, 07:17 PM I purchased a .223, I cant wait to get it.
dive4food 11-20-2007, 04:00 AM Are you able to make a 30-06 version yet? I've got 5 boxes of 30-06 shells I have for deer hunting. That's 100 rounds. I shot 2 deer this year so we are down to 98. It would be nice to put them to use underwater! :D
shaftslinger 11-21-2007, 07:36 AM 7.62x54R ?
Nope atm only .357 and .223 and i wont be able to work on new models for a while

Teh Wicked 12-18-2007, 11:35 AM Well it was a nice powerhead...But I lost that beotch somewhere...HAH! gonna have to order another...

JSpear 05-15-2008, 03:42 PM Ok,
Could someone help me out here. Where is the original thread describing these. I would just like to know a little more about them. What they're made of and the whole deal? How are they designed to work etc...

Could someone help me out here. Where is the original thread describing these. I would just like to know a little more about them. What they're made of and the whole deal? How are they designed to work etc...
Hi Jspear,
This is the origional thread I just stopped making them for a few months last year and the first of this year so I took down some of the info to stop orders.
Basically this is 3/4" solid round aluminum that I take and turn on my lathe to create a holder for a .357 or .223 caliber round. As you can see from the picture in my avatar there is a piece of tubing that slips in behind the shell. The 5/16th speartip is then slid inside the tubing tip first till it touches the back of the round (primer). When you fire it at a fish/whatever you need to protect yourself from. The front of the PPD has a cutting face that bites into said creature and the ppd stops. The inertia of the shaft pushes the tip of the spear into the primer and fires off the round. Normally the round will do quite a bit of damage to the animal and the concussion from the blast will stone/stun it as well.
These are reusable and can be reloaded buy pushing out the spent shell casing and inserting a new round. Just remove any shell/casing from them after diving and soak them in fresh water till the next time you want to use them.
You will need to coat the primer and around the lead where the casing is crimmped on it to ensure no water penetrates it. I use finger nail polish and have no problems with mine. If you shake the round you can hear the powder in it. If no powder is heard the round is probaly wet and wont go off.
And that in a nut shell is the ppd that I'm making
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. Many people on these boards have used the ones that I make and can help answer questions as well about durability and effectiveness.

stevemc1 05-24-2008, 11:57 AM Is there a groove for a lanyard, so it doesnt fall completely off during deco when the sharks start finding you?
shaftslinger 05-25-2008, 10:26 AM Is there a groove for a lanyard, so it doesnt fall completely off during deco when the sharks start finding you?
Yep I cut a groove in them for those that want to put a lanyard on them. I never have had a problem with them falling off though.
If your shaft allows too much play so that the ppd will fall off when you turn your speargun upside down then just indent the inside of the tubing around the flange with a punch and it will hold better.
stevemc1 05-27-2008, 11:34 AM OK, I will take 6, 2 for me, 2 for my girlfriend, and 2 for a friend that seems to attract sharks-he likes to repeatedly dive a spot, until the big boys come. All in .223, 5/16ths shaft. Thanks, all shipping info will be on Paypal, Steve McAdoo
shaftslinger 06-01-2008, 04:40 PM All orders should have been recieved by now. If not let me know.
shaftslinger 07-03-2008, 05:03 PM Ok gonna be hectic for me here shortly with moving into new house and 3rd son being born all in the next month. If you need ppd's over the next month or till say middle of august let me know now or it may be a bit delayed after ordering due to my schedule.
I will still be making them through all this but instead of a couple of days turn around it make be a week or 2 before I can get them out.
Dave

Yes as of next week i will have power on in my workshop and making ppds again.
shaftslinger 08-27-2008, 03:48 PM how well does a 44 mag do?
Never tested a 44 due to .357 never failing me. I make .223 only because so many others like them. 44mag are too expensive to warrant using them as far as i am concerned.
