Unless you are a hell of a brute, I wouldn't recommend it.

I bought some and made some bands about 1.5 or 2 inches longer than usual for that gun. After much straining and grunting, with cramps in even my hamstrings, I got all three wishbones on the first fin. There was no way I could have gotten one to the second fin, much less the third.

I donated my bands to an equipment auction. I hope the guy who bought them doesn't trace them back to me.

Several years ago, Daryl Wong, who is notorious for cutting his bands to a length that is hard for most of us to cock, ordered a batch for his gang. They made new bands and went diving, and the strongest one of them jumped in and was confronted with a school of ono, but couldn't cock his gun, so they sent the remainder of the rubber back and traded for black.

Of course you could always cut it long enough to cock, but that would be counterproductive, since it wouldn't be accelerating the shaft for as long a distance as normal rubber.

This is the key, the greater period of time the band has to apply a force on the shaft the better, especially if your trying to spear a big fish.
