Is there spearfishing allowed in the Grenadines? Also are spearguns allowed, or just slings and polespears, and is it freediving only?
Thanks, any info is helpfull!!!

My understanding is that spearing is prohibited for visitors, but that is not from an official source (http://www.diveguide.com/stvi-scuba.htm). I know that you cannot spear in the marine park around the Tobago Cays, but the locals sell speared fish and lobster to boats anchored there. I suggest that you contact someone within the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Great info, Kite. Thanks a lot! I also read that spearfishing was prohibited for visitors, but again it was not an official site.

I just got back from the Grenadines and noticed a sign at the airport. It appears that Lobsters can be taken by visitors withing the season which I forget now. Spearguns very from island to island I believe and need to be liscenced?? Ofcourse when you ask a local they have no idea about the regulations and reply, we do whatever we want. I didn't get out on any bluewater reefs but did notice a lot of mangrove snappers hanging out around where we were and a few spades.

as far as i know, spearing is illegal for tourists in the grenadines, if you have your own boat with a gun on board, no problem, but i know of a guy who had his speargun confiscated in St Vincent, he kicked up a fuss i believe and it was returned when he was leaving, but IMO not worth the hassle.

I've been to St. Vincent a couple times. Though I've never seen it in writing, I have been informed that spearing is for locals only. Like most small Caribbean islands, it is not stringently enforced but you will have problems getting your gun into the country. Guns are confiscated at the customs desk.
