View Full Version : Chum and they will come-Chumfest 2
Ed Walker 09-17-2007, 12:41 AM Late report. Had Red Tide, Bucket, Fitzition, and Rolo in for a few days of hunting in great conditions. Vis was really good, and the fish were plentiful.
The short version is that we shot a bunch of blacks, muttons, ceros, and yellowjack. Found top to bottom vis in 70 feet of water had a good time fighting fish, the most notable was a 40 pound (on the scale) kingfish that cruised into the zone with a friend and after a lot of yelling and pointing among divers who could see thev fish 60 feet down, he ended up on the end of Buckets spear. Awesome fish.
Today we found some new spots in 45-55 feet, again with top to bottom vis, that each produced a few blacks and muttons and a lot of jacks. We stopped by the House of Pain where Bucket scored a pair of big blacks.
Pics later although I personally dont care to post the perfectly legal dock of death shots as they only bolster the anti-fishing zealots.
jeepshapes 09-17-2007, 01:23 AM awesome report ed.
ApneaSpearo 09-17-2007, 03:10 AM Sounds like an awesome time, glad you guys had good vis and that the fish showed up
Gamble 09-17-2007, 10:30 AM Ed when some of the best freedivers in the country have a god day the fish huggers need to deal with it. I'm sure that everyone including the fish huggers, understand that this isn't a normal situation or occurrence.
Glad you guys slayed-em wish I could have made it!

Yeah, right.
Richies got the kingfish pics on his camera which should be good. It was an SKA tournament contender back home.
Many big fish, including Zacker's Smoker...
What soy sauce should I buy?;)
Ed Walker 09-17-2007, 05:51 PM !
pier-pressure 09-17-2007, 06:01 PM How do you guys cook or prepare your Kingfish, I see the soy bottle, not sashimi ??? I always give away my Kingfish, I love it in escabeche but dont know how to make it, I am not sure how good it would be for Ceviche.
Bucket One 09-17-2007, 08:25 PM Thanks for another great weekend Ed. I'm telling you whoever misses one of the chumfests really misses out on something special. You can't beat a great time and fish with great friends.
Here's the 40 lb smoking kingfish but the dock pics really make the fish look its real size.
Gamble 09-17-2007, 08:54 PM NICE SMOKER BROTHER!!!
lwrkzundrh2ohunter 09-17-2007, 09:07 PM I can't believe I missed this one! It sounds like you guys literaly killed it out there. I knew I should have skipped worked and gone down, oh well, there's always next year...or next week.

Jason
You might even have a new gun by then! I sanded up the stock tonight and so far it is looking real nice. Straight too.
deepdestroyer 09-18-2007, 12:59 AM Maybe if you kill a few 100lb carbos with this one before you lose it!
Mobile Diver 09-18-2007, 09:59 AM VERY nice catch!! I gotta try this chum thing sometime.
Ed Walker 09-19-2007, 01:35 PM I just found the chum receipt for one day on the counter. It was over $100. It does make a difference. Thats why virtually every rod and reel reef fisherman here wont fish without it. Just hanging the bag helps draw ceros and YTs while you are out swimming around. The bottom chum coaxes the blacks out of the caves before you get in, not to mention getting the YT mass all fired up which also helps draw the blacks and other things like kings and yellow jacks.
JAW-I cant believe you let such a minor thing as blood in your lungs keep you from coming down.
Had a great time diving with the gang as usual. Something I look forward to all year.
pier-pressure 09-19-2007, 02:43 PM So you guys put out one bag on the surface and one on the ocean bottom ?
Do the sharks also seem to move in quickly ? In other words does it seem like you have a window of opportunity before it gets dangerous ?
Do you reload the bag with a new block a couple of times, or one bag, get what you can, then get the hell out and move to another spot and start again ?
Never really chummed before for spearing, but of course for rod and reel yes.

We've been chumming for a few years, but generally on the down low (some spearo's think its unethical:redcard:),and usually when things are slow or fish are spooky. We've never had a run in with sharks (at least attributed to the chum line). Perhaps the chum we use has an infuence on that.
We generally decide what we're going to be tagging before we throw out the bag(s) top for dolphin etc., mid for 'hoos etc., and bottom for the usual. The size of the holes in the bag are important depending on the chum you will use (same application as fishing)- we use a home made 3 gallon plastic container for the bottom.
Generally a 7-10# block is enough to hunt a spot, (remember the chum is used to attract the fish, lessen their guard:lol:, and perhaps put them in "feed mode" so they move around more, and of course keep'em in the area, the difference to fishing which generally is to attract the bait balls- hence you end up using alot of chum)
We wait about 15-20 min before submerging and start our hunt about 200-300 ft from the chum and work around it tightening the circle. by the time we are near the chum the cooler is full:awink: We generally move out to another area after the fish spook (not necessarily that the chum ran out)
If we're on the top or mid column we sometimes also chunk (works great on dolphin)
just my 2 cents...good luck:toast:

I don't catch (I'm a hook and liner) too many big ones, usually 30 inches or so but every one including my biggest (48 inches) i have deep fried in beer batter that i get from the store....add 1 cold beer, some evrglades seasoning and its great. Call me wierd but I like it cold as a snack the next few days too. Or just call me wierd because I fish instead of dive. Tell you what though, I am very impressed with the size of fish you spear at the reletively shallow depth. usually less than 100ft. Man I should just sell my rods and reels and get a gun. <<<<<not worthy :)
Gunny 09-21-2007, 08:03 AM Namanut don't do it! Spearfishing is an evil religion that will take over your life and ruin rod and reel fishing forever.
