I am moving to Okinawa in January. I will be stationed at Kadena AFB. I see there are a good number of spearos on this board from Okinawa. I’m looking forward to getting over there and doing some diving and spearing. I have a few questions for anyone who may be able to help. After talking to some friends that were over there in the past, I have decided to ship my boat over (21 foot center console). I have spoken with a few insurance companies and I can’t find anyone who will write insurance over there. What are people using? Is there decent storage at the Marina, or would I keep it at my home? Also, is there anything you recommend I do before I leave the States? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Awesome!!!! Well I think you can get insurance through the same people that give you car insurance here like ACE or AIU but Im not possitive. Im sure Cww180 will have better a answer in the future. I do know that you have to get JCI on a boat and that will be good for 6 years. Also have to get it registered in japan and get a boat license. Im not completly sure about all of that but I can say that it will be a little bit of cash. Those are some other things that need to be taken in consideration. The Marina would be a good place to store the boat but it all outside storage and I think its like $2 a day or $20 a month. If you are lucky and find a house off base with room for a boat you can park it there or on base housing should be able to accomadate a boat.

Sorry I dont have the specifics. Just be prepared for that long plane ride and some HUMID! weather in the summer. Eat at your favorite places and hit the home depot or sears cuz you wont find any of those around here :D

I would check with Kadena Marina and see what it would cost to be able to use your boat on Okinawa. Here's a link:

From my understanding its expensive and a royal PITA.

Good luck.

Lucky! I'm still trying to figure out who exactly I have to save from extreme peril or which generals' daughter I'd have to date so I can head over there!

It would seem that there is plenty of info on this board already. I don't have much to offer as far as boat info, but I always look forward to meeting new spearos. See you when you get here for some diving. Oh, you don't need a boat to enjoy Okinawa diving, so in the mean time, while you work to get your boat set up, there is plenty of diving to do.
