I am standing here looking into the backyard and wondering what kind of landscapeing can I do, just then the thought occured to find some salvage cast iron fence for some vines/roses. Anybody know af a good place to look for old salvage fencing? We really dont have anything like the east coast fences you see in Georgia and the Carolinas around Oklahoma. Let me know if you have any or any leads.

Thanks

Steven

Well "if" you can find it expect to pay dearly. old cast iron fence is considered antique in nature and is priced according to it's degree of detail and quantity. Large sections are VERY pricey and small pieces cheaper...
HINT: drive around until you see some old cracker shack that has it falling down and all rusty and knock on the door and make an offer..

I've got a stack of the stuff laying at the shop. It's wrought-iron railing and stair railing with corner pieces for the top of pillars. By the look of it, it probably came off a plantation house. What's it worth.

Check on craigslist. I've seen cast iron fences in the free section. Never know what you might find in there

Have you considered buying new solid wrought iron fencing. Newly made iron fences still bring back the historic designs for properties. The most impressive feature is that the systems are affordable.

I have bought from King Archetectural Metals before, and have been pleased with them.

Big selection and reasonable prices. Many pieces are made to fit together with minimal setup time, if you have the ability to make small tack welds.

Note that much of what you would buy new is not "wrought iron", which is hand forged. Most of what you would see today is assembled from steel castings and normal tubular steel, which are lots cheaper than the relatively few blacksmiths around who still do it authentically.

Whether you care, of course, depends on whether you just want the look, or if you want it to be the real thing.

I just did my backyard in an aluminium fence. I am in Florida so I'm always worried about the rust factor. It came out really nice and was easy to install. I purchased it from Ronnie at GreatFenceDistributors in Texas and had it shipped to Florida. I have now installed it on several jobs I've done, I'm a home builder. Everyone has been very satisfied. I know it isn't as authenic as the cast iron, but not a bad alterative
