View Full Version : Shaft Overhang?

I saw on another thread someone mentioned that about 13" is a good shaft overhang. I currently have 17" of shaft overhang on my sea hornet. My question is will that much overhang affect my accuracy at all?

I don't think so, may shoot a little low out far but some more band power can remedy that. I've got an old 42 biller with a 48 shaft in it(bout 16" incl. tip overhang), I use 3-9/16's on it and it'll kill some fish now! I put it on for a little more weight and therefore penetration and it works great. Great rock gun

I like 6-12" of overhang on my guns.

I seem to shoot most accurately when I have 17-18 inches of overhang...have tried less but it throws me off...I say use however much overhang you need to be the most efficient hunter!

Increasing band power to remedy too much shaft overhang is exactly what you DON'T want to do. For rock shooting you are probably OK, but if you took a long shot with it, then shoot a gun with proper overhang, you'd see the difference.

I think 17" of overhang is too much, but thats my personal opinion.

How do you define shaft overhang? Are you using the difference between the gun length and shaft length? or are you saying its 17" from the farthest point of your gun to the tip of the shaft?

I measure mine from the tip of the spear to the beginning of the muzzle and its about 9" total including my spinner tip.

Measured from the end of the gun to the end of the shaft.

Anywhere from 9" to 12" of overhang is about perfect.

OK, why is there over 2 inches of shaft between the point and the flopper of many shafts? Is there any disadvantage to having the point just beyond the flopper?

After sharpening shafts for some time I would think that that number would get progressively shorter. I have a couple shafts that have about 1" and others closer to 3".

I don't know if it would be an advantage or disadvantage, never thought about that.:scratchhead:

Conversely, I wonder if having too little overhang might affect a shot, more length having more stability in trajectory?(Prob. not, but just a thouht;)

I have been told that too little or too much will screw things up.

After losing a couple of flounders(You missed a Flounder:rofl:I know I hit that damn flounder - how did he come off??) I figured it out. On very hard bottom off Pasco County :awink:, you must have very short distance between flopper and point or flopper never goes thru... for me, it took a while to figure that one out!

OK, why is there over 2 inches of shaft between the point and the flopper of many shafts? Is there any disadvantage to having the point just beyond the flopper? If you're using double floppers then it doesn't matter. If you're using a single flopper you must have that distance in front of it, at minimum 2". This acts in a similar way that a 2nd flopper would, any shorter and the shaft will pull out of the fish. If you're at the point of sharpening a shaft and it starts getting significantly below 2" you should consider repositioning the flopper.

You are right on with this statement. The shalt flipers can be changed ( longer or shorter) or you can check out a biller floridian shaft, i think they are nice. It is what i use and i love them they have a small fliper close to the tip and a longer one a little further down. They are great for the rock game.

I'm not experianced with this but I was just wondering if shooting the flounder at more of an angle instead of straight down would give the tip more room for the flopper to deploy propperly. also the tip would just scrape along the bottom instead of stopping when it hit. Just a thought

You don't even need to shoot them, just stab them... if the flopper does not engage thats one less thing you have to worry about!!!:D

That will work great when trucking down the ledge and coming on that one surprise flounder, but when you get into a big floudner patch, it takes a little strategy and freeshafts to work the whole patch without spooking any.

Please help me understand this concept, mon. How does the shaft length from flopper to point make a difference in keeping the shaft from pulling out?

The tip of the shaft and the flopper work together to keep the fish on. If the tip is very short, it can't keep the fish from turning and tearing off. I think this effect is made worse when shooting large, strong fish with soft flesh, like wahoo, kingfish that are powerful enough to tear holes in them that the point can pass through. Excuse the crudeness of the drawing, but I think it shows what I'm talking about.

Thanks, KJ, the pic helps. More shaft ahead of the flopper changes the pivot point somewhat???

I got in a pinch one day and had a shaft that the flopper actualy went about 1/4 inch into my commercial muzzle,..so I had like 3 inches sticking out of the muzzle,...funny thing it was dead on? that is until I donated it to a snapper in a double culvert on Pasco:pissed:

Mix the two, wipe it around the rim of the lid and handles, so when the little guys get their paws in the stuff they lick em to clean em off!! you can picture teh rest. I had that problem in my old apartment, did that once and no more problems.
