I'm slowly learning the art of fish carving. It's pretty tough. I think the key to it is a very sharp knife or two.

You have to be a member of the fisherman's association (AKA the Okinawan Mafia) to sell fish. If you know some Japanese folks around the hood, you could probably sell to them. But most aren't going to buy a $200 fish, at least most folks in my neighborhood.

I didn`t even know thats where any records were shot until I spoke w/ Paul Smith like 3 weeks ago. I like it because the reef is good and there are plenty of Taman in the sand.

Anywhere there is sand there is Taman. Most Taman are found on the west side. Geeze I wish this weather would clear so I can continue my quest on the east side. :smthumbup:Nice fish! Nothing better than seeing that blue monster underwater. Cept for putting a spear through it!

Played hookie from work today (great to be a civilian again)! That big makbu got me thinking of a makabu/taman spot on Sesoko. Point of sand Sesoko island side on right side of the bridge crossing to Sesoko. Right on the edge of the the channel. Anyways havent been there in years and spot I took my biggest Taman, almost 8 kilos.

While driving around Motobu the water was looking too good. Couldn't wait and ended up stopping at the last rest area across from the gravel pit right beside looks to be a new port. New spot never dove the area. Anyways spot has promise. Many of the big blue parrots "Gena" in Okinawan Hogen. Few Taman, and lots of reef fish. Nothing much up on the reef most of the fish were in the 30-40 foot range right on the drop. Couldn't see the fish from the surface even though the vis was ok. Soon as you would drop to the bottom they would magically appear. Picked up a couple sweetlips and while I was retrieving one of them 3, 2-3 kilo range Akagin (red coral trout grouper) came up and said Hey whats up. Went back to the surface and they hung around as usual dumb asses and just watched me from below. After I had rested a bit dropped down and as usual they all came to greet me. Came to within a foot of my shaft point (so to speak) and let the biggest one have it. Turned out to be right at 3 kilos.

Great way to kill a couple hours in the afternoon. Would recommend giving it a try sometime. Entry was at the edge of the jacks. Went a short distance right and didn't look so good. Went back to the left of the entry point and that's where the fish started.
Cheers, Woody

Nope no fishing dudes present, although I never let them bother me. I pretty much get in the water anywhere. Just pull up, get dressed, act like I own the place, and have never had anyone bother me. Of course everyone gawks at the fish when you get out. But to be expected.
Happy hunting Woody

Glad to see your good habbits. Those things get up to 6kg so I have seen and when they do they arent so stupid. Only the small ones are dumb.
If you ever go to EI or IE w/e it is, the port for the fairy always has crystal clear water and I have always wanted to dive it. Every boat channel I have ever dove held some of the biggest fish.
8kg taman would be a world record and not only that, it would be a record for the biggest taman ever pulled out of the ocean. I have never seen any above 6kg.
Awesome stuff Woody!
I dont know if you realized but last week we were side by side on the way out gate one after work. If Im not mistaken. I dont think too many people own that bright blue car.

Looks like it might be dead even....I say we give merman the nod since it looks like he maybe got a head shot! Not to say skinner's aint big cause it is!

Yeah the channels are a favorite "secret spot" of mine! Giving away a secret but there are some good fish in em! The Sesoko channel can be really good. Big GT cruise the bridge and the channel drop. Kinda a tricky place with all the boat traffic and current but at times well worth the dive. Nothing more scary than the sound of boats when your down.

There is a spot in the channel that have some concrete "tetra pots" the hollow jacks. Got to scuba them one time years ago and if you've ever seen the Okinawa dive spot book you would see them with GT cruising. They must be there all the time. The only time I dove they were there then.

The Motobu spot today caught my attention. It just looks fishy. Lots of coral heads with holes and caverns. There were more fish to the left of the entry point and more current. Probably the reason the fish were there.

Yeah I love those big akagin! My biggest was a 6 kilo one that I took on scuba at SUNABE of all places. It was at the steps just north of Ark Dive. Another great place for fish is Sunabe. Use to be my favorite. Just too many people anymore.

Yeah Rob I wasnt for sure but yep that was you. Probably on your way to that secret honey hole!

Yeah what is up with the tourney? Would love to shoot the shit and tell fish stories with everybody. Probably get my ass kicked but would be well worth the fun! Cheers Woody

On this vid Blue Visions they shoot some monsters! Like this one looks like it could bite your head off. They go nuts when you shoot the big ones.
GT huh? Well if you know that, then I bet a ton of other people know that so chances are they arent there. Im a little tired of being run over by boats.
I have seen huge coral trout near where you speak of. The seawall isnt the greatest of places yet it is alright on the best of days. Okinawas fish seem to be pretty smart and figuring tides, moon phases, and weather highly greaten your chance of good fish while other places near here they are always there.
I have only found one honey hole on this island and you have to be a deep diver to make it worth while and even then your only going to bring up maybe 10% of the fish you shoot. But by far it is the place with the biggest of all types of fish.
I heard yanaguni is awesome for fish. Get on Spearboard and look in the photo gallery. Look up the user ngng and you will be amazed at the fish he shoots down there. GTs are huge! Ishagaki is nice fishing as well.

Something to consider in the comparison photos. My fish was sitting in my cooler on ice all day (bent half way and stuffed in to fit) until I took this pic at sunset. I had to press down really hard on the head and tail to get the fish to lie somewhat flat for this pic. There was still some curvature of the body at the time of the photo. Any recommendations on cooking Makabu? I'm probably going to smoke them this weekend for my b-day. I'll probably start early, smoke 'em all day. That should be great!

I'm a big fan of sashimi, and I did cut some for sashimi. It just didn't have as much flavor as I would have expected. It was good in texture, but the taste was somewhat bland to me. Granted, I didn't eat it with soy or wasabi. Maybe that was part of the problem. I don't know.

Oh and by the way. All the meat is frozen. Can it be thawed, cut, and eaten raw?

Skiny ~ I know your the master diver out of everyone in Oki so I have no doubts that your fish is the mack daddy!

Man if your going to smoke all day can I come over and hit some of that too? :D Hmmm... Oh Teriyaki would be grand! BBQ wouldnt be bad niether. OH doooood!!! Try some POKE!!! Probably would have been better fresh but with all the crap you put in the POKE it will be fine.

Sesame seeds
Shoyju (sweeter soy sauce)
Diced Green onions
Diced onions

Hope I didnt forget anything. Then put it all in a big glad container and shake. Best damn thing ever! I love Ahi Poke! Shoot one day MerMan and I were POKE fools and had coral trout POKE. That mess was amazing!!!

Let me look up the Teriyaki....

Got it from mom, here doooood.

It is made with the Shoyu (type of soy sauce from Hawaii). I brought
some back. The commissary there might have it.
If you are cooking on the grill: marinate
1 cup of Shoyu
1 Cup of Brown sugar
sliced green onions
minced ginger
If you are cooking in the oven, same as above just add a cup of water.

Man not only am I giving out my best dive spots but my best recipes as well

I'll call you and let you know so I can bring you the CD's.

Typically Tuna is flash frozen, thawed and served. If you've ever been to Tsukiji in Tokyo, they auction the HUGE Tuna Frozen.

Most Westerns recommend freezing fish for at least 7-10 days to kill any worms or parasites prior to eating raw. You'll notice the meat is not as firm though.

I have shot a makabu as big if not bigger than that one. But he got tangled on the structure and someone had the great idea to yank my line hard which dislodged the fish as I was breathing up for the 100ft dive to untangle the line. Well I hit 80ft and saw the fish then I came up and he tugged. I went down to the bottom that time and saw no fish. It was quite dissapointing. That place is tretchorous! I lost a monster makabu and Gata there. It takes pure skill to land a monster there and its only been done once.

I shot a few huge ones myself, their very easy to shoot. so you lost your potential makabu because it was tangled down deep? and your partner pulled it loose from the barb? what a partner you got, he must be a idiot!

You aint lyin! Not an idiot just impatient.

I love to study the coral trout. They act as if they own the waters. Kinda like an ulua but not as aggressive. You saw that vid of Derek being chased by a big ulua in the dereks adventures didnt you?

Yeah, that shit was awesome! I like the vid of that huge school of them. I just can't figure out why I didn't see any steel flying. That would be nice. I want to shoot another ULUA. If I don't get my shooting line soon, can I use your old line?

Hey guy's,
New to this site. My buddy caught a large coral trout last week. A little over 6kg. Per the famous Paul Smith, this was a world record but he ate it before offcially weighing it. He did get a nice print and the lady weighed it at over 6kg. Here's the pic.

I think I saw the print as she was touching it up. Is it the store on 330 and did he hit it on the cheek, below the eye?

NO! This is something between me and JD. See last time JD Skinner needed bands. So he asked me and I said sure. But then he got him from someone else. Now he asked for mono but now it seems hes getting from someone else again :( Only Aquaman starts stuff not I.

I found this pic on the Team Rabitech web site, looks like Makabu to me or at least in the same family. :fish:
