Dudes figured I'd share a couple pics of my Garasa catches. Enjoy! All of these fish came from between Tori reef and Zanpa. The pic with the 6 and the sweetlips was from my buddy and I outside the hotel just south of Zanpa. I got 4 he got 2 and the DSL bubba.

The big guy was 68cm and almost 8 kilo. It is shown compared with a normal large garasa. Woulda be a record for sure but ate it before I was educated on this record thing. Not that it matters as Merman, I'm in in for the grub.

As you can see Garasa are my target of choice!

I don't think I've ever seen those in the water. Good eating huh? Good sashimi? I'll keep my eyes peeled next time the vis is half way descent. Nice catch dude.

No doubt the best sashimi or for that matter prepared anyway! As Chuck said full of fat/oil which makes the best sashimi or soup. They only eat uni (sea urchin). Good eating all the way:smthumbup:

Man that knife jaw is a monster! I haven't seen one that big ever. I went out by that reef after work today. I was going to call you but I don't have your home number. It was rough as hell anyways. I would guess head high and some overhead waves.

Woody,

Your going to tell me you shot all of those knife jaws in the day time? Man no wonder you dont see any knife jaws much anymore. You rapest
I like how thier jaws are so big. For someone who says they cant dive sure has mad accuracy, look at dem head shots!
Rob needs to get back on swings so we can get back in the water.
Awesome fish!!
Dooood, Woody! Now that I see your face, I have seen you everywhere and we have even crossed paths. I remember that mustache anywhere along with that afro. :D
Keep it up!

Haha, I've been on forums where they have moderators who will chew you out and delete your comment if your comment isn't directly related to the topic. I'm glad this shit isn't like that, because we never stay with the designated topic. For instance... What do rainbow runner have to do with knife jaw? haha

No way, I shot all the 60 lbs rainbow runner that day. All by myself. Don't try to take credit for my catch dooode!

Kev,
Here's my story....grew up in Florida. While other guys were out racing cars I was fishing and hunting. Came into the AF right after high school and continued those same hobbies. Even did some professional bass fishing for 7 years while stationed in North Carolina.
Came here 16 years ago and soon got hooked up with a member of the mob (fishing association) Started with a little Beauchat single band rear handle gun. Graduated to the local's favorite gun the "Cannon" Its a 2 band gun with a small extension in the back of the trigger grip (I'll get to why that is important in a couple sentences). Shit gun that is heavy, breaks all the time but was the perfect gun to learn to shoot fish with. My mob friend is kinda a renegade guy who loves to spearfish like us. He taught me the ropes really well. What fish live where on the reef, how to "call" them and just everything about the local fish. He taught me which fish were best and the very important skill of head shots. Now I don't always hit the head however, normally if I can't at least get a shot at the head I won't take anything. I don't take ass shots (so to speak) on going away fish. Nothing worse than gut shooting a fish and it getting off and dying in a whole somewhere. Also, I use to sell fish at the Chatan port and fish that are not shot in the head just won't get you much money. Although I've long stopped selling fish and now do it for the thrill, I still only take head shots. The trick is shoot for the nose.

Garasa are easy fish to shoot once you find them. They spend most of their times in holes, caves or caverns. They never venture far from their hideout. The big dudes are solitary and the smaller ones can be found in groups of 2-4.

If they see you they will come out of the hole to greet you. They will then make a couple trips from their hole to you and eventually they will leave. You can usually get a good shot on the second trip. Don't wait any longer cause you might lose the shot. Sometimes they will come so close you have a difficult time getting the shot because they are a mere inches from your speartip.

I have shot 2 of those huge guys. Both of them were alone under coral heads (or fish apartments as I call them.) If you get lucky enough to find them under a head mark their location in your memory and go back for a breath. Once you are ready go right back down and they will usually still be in the exact spot. Hit em quick!

The secret to finding them are the chubs! Find them and you are in the right area for Garasa. That's about the most I can give away about them.

Guns....lots of talk and opinions. Here's Woody's: In my opinion range is the key reason to purchase a particular gun. That is why I have a "bigger" gun. Range. You just can't make long, accurate shots with a smaller gun. I like mid-handle guns and here's why.
A simple question....
Which is more accurate, pistol or rifle. Answer is definately the rifle. What style gun more accurately represents a rifle? Mid handle of course.:BoomSmilie_anim::fro:

My opinion and mine only. Bottom line practice makes perfect.
Cheers Ya'll,
Woody

:allhail:

Yup, I agree totaly. Fish are half price if not shot in the head. But as far as guns, if you have a euro gun biult right it will just as accurate. Mid handle just helps to move your gun around in the water and for a brace for the recoil. My euro is pin point accurate. But I agree on your concept. I use 140cm guns around here unless the vis is crap.

Your right about chubs and knife jaw, when ever I see em there in the same cave. The local izakaya owner I know calls them "Ishiday" how it sounds not how its spelled. haha. Anyway, he said there one of the most expensive because they are so deliscious. Funny thing about the Cannon is that i have one, with a rail, its badass though, yeah its crap but its accurate and powerful. Its killed a crap load of fish.:BoomSmilie_anim::fish:

Yeah the Ishidai is the Striped Knife Jaw, the Ishigakidai is the Spotted Knife Jaw. Everyone that I talked to said the same thing that the are a very expensive fish and I heard that is because they are a difficult fish to catch on hook & line (I'm not sure never tried).
