View Full Version : DAN - Are you a member?
NSEARCH 10-11-2007, 11:47 AM If so, which plan and why? How long have you been a member? Care to share any experiences you've had dealing with DAN from any dive-related accidents or other coverages?
I thought this would be a good topic of discussion since I recently renewed my membership. I've been under the Master Plan for a few years now but I think the Preferred Plan is the way to go for the best bang for the buck. I don't do diving vacations so all of that coverage is meaningless to me but for an extra $35 I'll get $125,000 more in coverage in the case I do have a serious accident.

PAT A 10-11-2007, 12:14 PM I have the Preferred plan because like you said, it seems to be the best bang for your buck, and as far as insurance goes its cheap. Another reason is That I cant get a straight answer from my medical insurance carrier if I would be covered in the event of a serious accident. I also tend to be somewhat accident prone (Knock on wood,I havent had a serioius injury in a couple of years) and when I look back on some of the stupid shit I have done over the years I can use all the help I can get. Thankfully I havent had to use it yet, and hope I never do. Also now that my son is diving I have him covered as well, but we also dive very conservative profiles when he is with me.
Speargun 10-11-2007, 01:46 PM If you ever have to go for a chamber ride, just make sure that they take DAN. There has been a lot of bad press about DAN refusing to pay some chamber operators & some chamber operators refusing to take DAN anymore.

From what I understood is that was the concern with a lot of chambers located outside of the United States.

miakka spearo 10-11-2007, 07:23 PM Ive been a member since 2002. Preffered plan. Took a table 6 ride and a tail dive in early 2006 and they covered every penny of the 11k bill. I will always be a member.

FWIW-- While I beleive if you are diving without DAN your an IDIOT, I am currently having problems with DAN and them covering my helo transport. I am waiting to see the end result before I post an essay on my experiance complete with name and office phone numbers. :cussing:

Sasquatch 10-12-2007, 10:51 AM I didn't think I dove enough to get a membership, but now it just seems foolish not to. I'm a super-duper-preferred member (or whatever the highest is) that I got for volunteering for one of the their studies.

kitefisherman 10-15-2007, 09:23 AM Back in 2006, DAN was having a dispute with some foreign (non U.S.) hyperbaric chambers because DAN thought that the chamber charges were excessive. I believe that DAN has made progress in its resolution of the matter since then.
Nevertheless, this year I went with the Dive Assure plan. Unlike DAN's policy, Dive Assure is a primary (not a secondary) policy administered by AIG (the largest US based insurance company in the world). The plan is at http://www.diveassure.com/new/usa/. The Platimum plan that I chose was $99/year and appears to have about double the DAN Preferred plan in benefits for the same cost (including DAN membership). They also have a more basic Gold Plan with $250,000 of benefits for $79/year.
My primary health insurance policy has a scuba diving injury exclusion; accordingly, my dive insurance will be my sole source of protection in the case of an accident.
I wonder how many other policyholders that DAN lost because of its dispute. I fear that it may be paying very heavily for its principles. While I admire DAN and its good works, I need to protect myself more.

Thanks for the link John!:toast: I wasnt aware that there were any other dive insurance plans out there. I am going to seriously look into the AIG plan when my current DAN policy expires.
Divin' fool 10-17-2007, 10:06 AM Been a member for many years.... since my Med insurance won't cover many diving accidents....IMHO it's cheap insurance in the event of a med diving issue.
msilva2467 01-10-2008, 02:54 PM I have been a member since 04 with the preferred plan. I joined when I started doing liveaboard trips. I think it is a great plan and would highly recommend it to all fellow divers.
I hope to never use it, but it is nice to know I have it.
The 66 Kid 01-13-2008, 12:31 PM I took a look at both DAN and Dive Assure programs and bought a 2 year Platnium membership to Dive Assure this morning. I hope never to have to tell anyone about their claims handling.
