My dog seems to have ear infecction.
Has foul odor , and when i massage his ear cannal i can hear liqud. Every once in a while some nasty earwax crud comes out. He doesnt seem to be in pain though (doesnt cry). Is this a Vet visit thing or will it clear up on it own. Is there something i can do?

My goldens used to get something similiar, if it hasnt become to bad I used an ear cleansing solution and some q-tips to clean their ears twice daily till it cleared up. There was two times when I had to apply topical anti-biotic ointment to the ear but try the first step and see what happens.

This is the best write up I've ever seen on ear problems in dogs http://animalpetdoctor.homestead.com/Ears.html DO NOT use any alcohol containing ear wash. I did a peroxide flush and the mite treatment with the .01% ivomec because I already have ivomec (I use it for heartworm) and my dogs problem went away.

Be very careful if you're going to use Q-tips, do not go inside the ear canal.

EDIT- It just occurred to me I'm not qualified to respond, I'm not a vet nor a breeder, sorry.

That ivomec solution works really good.My labs are constantly having ear problems, especially during summer water training sessions.A trip to the vet should be unneccessary. If the ivomec thing doesn't work,go to your local vet supply place and pick up the more specialized ear drops.

Agreed with the Q-tips, use them to clean the outer ear and not the ear canal.

Not a question that can be answered online. If you caught it early, then cleaning his ears out regularly is probably all you need to do. If you let the infection get worse, then you might need something a little stronger than earwash. Depends on just how bad it really is.
90% of the ear infections my dogs have gotten clear up with regular cleaning; a few times we needed antibiotics from the vet.

Get in touch with Double-Gun...he's a vet... I had the same problem with my dog. He suggested a Rx that knocked it right out. I believe it is caused by a yeast bacteria. David tells me that no over the counter med will cure it.

I'm no vet but I was told by my vet that a yeast bacteria causes most of the ear infections... We always just took them to the vet, it's over quicker, less to worry about, and easy.. Just put in a few drops and you're good to go. Our vet told us to watch out when we're bathing him, if water gets in their ear and sits, it can cause those infections. He also said them having ear mites sometimes are a precursor for getting the infection.. I guess where they're biting them it can get irritated and easier for bacteria to gain a foothold. Like I said, I'm no vet but my dog has been taken to the vet enough times that what they say starts to sink in.. The amount of drops that I was given was enough to take care of his problems several times over, so just put it in the refrigerator and use it again if you start to smell the yeast in their ears.
