how to free shaft an amberjack. i try to keep my videos entertaining as well as educational. i hope this helps any diver who is reluctant to free shaft a jack. as you can see in the video it's just a matter of shot placement.

sorry no killing in this one but when i was reviewing this footage i shot two years ago i figured it was worth putting together. this was a number that SpearOne gave me that is near some other sites i have marked. he called it "Boulder City" and rightfully so. it's in an area of the Grounds that is filled with large structure like this. the top of the break is around 100ft and it breaks and slopes to 138ft.

the NMFS tells us that red grouper are in fact now not believed to be over fished or undergoing overfishing. Gulf of Mexico Grouper Forum 2007 (http://www.fishkillavids.com/videos/redgrouperassessment.wmv)
they still have not reversed the bag limit restriction despite admitting that their study was wrong.
on that note enjoy the video of all the red grouper swimming around! remember you can still only shoot two.

new one. second dive of the trip right after dad got the 14.5lb hog. i see off to my right what i thought was a shark. i headed that way to confirm. lo and behold it's a big ol' cobia. now where's dad to take this beast down. i was hoping he'd be right there to take a shot and i could put a second shaft in the monster but after waiting a few minutes dad never shows. i didn't want to deal with a monster cobia and my camera all at once. i do take all the gags that were milling around underneath the cobia, also the hog. camera in my left hand gun in my right.

this is the NBC Tampa affiliates fishing show that i work for. i enjoy working with these captains and producers. both capt. mike and capt. billy are pro-spearfishing and they always enjoy listening to my stories about the last trip i've done. right now this fishing show is only shown in a few markets including the channel 8 Tampa NBC station. next year we might be getting into a few more markets.
notice the sting of the sea hornets commercial rhino. with the right shot placement the other gags didn't even care that they lost one of their own. after this dive they hook and lined 4 more keeper gags off this same spot.

a big congrats on everyone who made it to the weigh in and participated. it's great to see so many spearos competing. also a special congrats on team fatal with the 60lb carbo. you guys worked hard for that one. next year i'll have to come along and show you how to put that 100lb fat nasty in the boat

was hiking across the mountain of video that is starting to stack up on my work desk and came across this footage of two huge "blue backed" jacks. i want to say that i heard this term from spear one. blue backed is just another way of saying monsterously HUGE! notice how small their tails look compared to their over all mass. you'll see the camera start to shake towards the end as i'm banging my gun against my housing to try to get one of them to turn for a better shot. no such luck. only a very well placed free shaft was going to let me go home with one of those big fish and after the initial "hey what are you doing" look the first jack gave me there never was another perfect shot angle. you never know what's going to swim right up to you in the grounds. i'd conservatively say those jacks were 45 to 50#s.
