View Full Version : Press in Iraq??
fl_coastie 10-16-2007, 07:37 PM Who think that the press should have free rein on what they report on and cover in Iraq.
Just food for thought, is it right that the enemy can turn their TV on and see what we are doing to fight them, see what our tactics are?
On the other side of the argument, should'nt we have a right to know where our tax dollars are going and what is going on in a war we are paying for?
I am on the side of the less press the better, just wondering where everyone else stands on this subject?
bgbill 10-16-2007, 08:19 PM I don't think there is a right of free speech in Iraq, especially during war time, I believe in a free press, but ***********************************s like geraldo gave away troop positions before during reports.
The press has also taken things out of context and gotten some of our guys in trouble for their reports.
100days-a-year 10-16-2007, 11:29 PM How come the jackasses want to quote Sanchez and other retired servicemen when they bash the admin or policy, but not when Sanchez or others have truly painted them as a despicable bunch of sensationalist whores who place their own "rights" above the safety of our troops and national security?
sremsen 10-16-2007, 11:34 PM It is possible to report the events as they occur without harming the war effort. Unfortunately we have grown accustomed to 24hr news. In WW2 the press were able to report on the war, while the military had the power to cenor reports that they felt undermined the war effort. Sadly this administration has felt the need to censor all reporting of the war, thereby undermining their own policies. It is important for the public to see and know what we as a nation are fighting for, it is also important for the public to undertstand that there is a cost to war and it is being borne by our servicemen and women.

No, they have done a pretty good job of keeping the press in line during this war. They control where the reporters go and what they see. When soldiers began posting their own videos of combat on You tube the military shut them off. If you think there is fair reporting on the war then we must be watching and reading completely different news.
Gunny 10-17-2007, 07:27 AM The media covering the war in Iraq is one sided just like anywhere else in the country,....That one side is whatever holds your attention the longest. You hear about 2% of the good things we are doing over there. Just take a look at your local evening news. Good news and fair reporting never sells.
AristaKat 10-17-2007, 08:19 AM I agree with Gunny my wife and I have spoken about how and what the news reports . They seems to report bad stuff almost always rather its war or our own country. I am for keeping our arm forces safe if thats keeping a little control on press over there then fine with me
Marcus 10-17-2007, 10:09 AM It's a shame we have very few unbiased reporting agencies out there anymore. It's all about the money and people are too stupid these days to understand that. Maybe it's because TVs are too cheap and we have too many stupid people watching TV and buying the crap that's advertised?
Cherokee Spear 10-17-2007, 11:22 AM I'm divided on this because I'd like to REALLY know what's going on in the war but I don't trust anyone in the News Agencies enough to truly appreciate what they have to say.. I pretty much lost faith in them after the whole 9/11 situation.. They played the crash over and over and people were glued to the News Channel to see what would turn up or happen next, I was one of them..... There wasn't really much to report on after the fact and they just kept people hanging by a thread to boost their ratings IMO, instead of giving the cold hard facts. I still have unanswered questions regarding it.. I might have missed out on a lot because I stopped watching but I just couldn't take it anymore, the same way with this war.. It's dragged on too long, very repetitive.

They can keep reportes out of certain areas but that doesnt keep them from reporting what they want. One day they want to bash the war, the next day bash the troops, the next day the president, and in the mean time there are people loosing family memebers to a cause that the press makes into a joke. It is a shame that CNN, FOX, or any other press would undermine our countries efforts to make this a safer place to live.

I agree wih you , I just wish they would be able to report all the news. The good and the bad. Unfortunately the news we receive in this country is so filtered that we never get a real picture of the events occurring in Iraq. The networks and many major newspapers have cut back drastically on their overseas bureaus, focusing on the sh*t happening in Hollywood instead of the Middle East. Most of the news I get on the events in the Middle East comes from news sources in that region, although they have a distinct bias also. Its no wonder so many Americans are ignorant of events in the Middle East given the source of their information.
ny_er 10-17-2007, 07:37 PM What good news are guys talking about? Is there anything good happening over there?
I mean comparatively, do you want hear about a school being opened?

well they have killed like 80 reporters over there so far, so it might be tough for people to get out and cover the news in iraq

No you dont hear about a school being opened,..or an orphanage being rebuilt with real beds to sleep in vs: concrete,.or drinking water being made potable, or power being hooked up to areas that never had power..or medical attention being given to people who have never seen a doc in their whole life,......but it happens every day,..............thats my point
Yea we busted up a lot of shit doing the do over there, however a lot of good things have happened and continue to happen,......but you will never know about it via the media,...............I would tell you to go to your local Marine or Army recruiting office and ask them about good things accomplished
chances are that young man or woman has been over there and then you can get it from the horses mouth

Damn right!!!
riplipper 10-19-2007, 09:24 AM I have a brother in law over there...no, he does not like being there and being at risk, but he says he was very impressed with progress we have made there. Especially schools, power, health and medical attention as well as thriving new businesses.
He also said there were an unbelievable amount of people that are glad we are there.... We NEVER see any of that on the news.
He did say there was the other side of the coin as well. You know, the side the media reports and puts 100% of their focus.
