Hey everyone, I was wondering why no one replied to my report on the other site, but it seems like everyone has come here. Anyway, heres my report from yesterday.
Got out today off Islamorada, did a little spearing and checked on some lobster spots. Vis was real nice on the edge, a solid 90-100 foot, with 70-80 inside the reef. Passed up a few questionable blacks on a big coral head, better safe than sorry. Saw a real nice red duck in to a head, but he was so deep up in there I couldnt get a clean shot. I somehow managed to shoot right over top of a good 7-8 pound mutton which got me kinda heated for a little while. Figured we would just check some heads on the way home and see if there were any lobster to be had this week. I started idling towards home while getting everything squared away on the deck. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a decent sized head out in the middle of no where. I hopped in with just a mask not even thinking there could be fish there......duh. What do I see but a fat black swimming real slow away from me. I yelled to my gf to toss me my fins and gun, and after getting settled I headed in the direction I last saw him. At this point Im thinking theres no way in hell, but to my surprise I spot him about 30 feet in front of me, layed up next to a small fan, and staring me down. I calmly gave my last kick and glided towards him, and popped him right behind the eye, he never moved. At this point Im pretty excited to have something to bring home, and pretty stoked that I stoned him, or so I thought. Tossed him in the boat, along with my gun, fins and other gear. As soon as I pulled the spear out of his head, he came back to life. He beat the crap out of my gear, tossed a spare band overboard, and managed to slap one of my cressi 2000's so hard it cracked and busted a 2" x 4" piece right off. He measured out at just shy of 33" and had a nice 23.5" girth, thanks to an 8" squirrelfish in his belly. All in all it was a day well spent, got plenty of fish to last a while and didnt have to kill a bunch to get it. I also found some good lobster holes, but I dont get off work until 8am wed. morning so we'll see if they are still there when I get to em.
*I copy/pasted from the other site and the pics didnt show up, Ill work on adding them later, in the meantime the black is in my avatar.
