View Full Version : stuck in the mud
Well, me and prater are sitting here on a boat stuck on a mud bar. We got stuck about an hour ago, and its just now low tide. Looks like we'll be here till about 1am when the tide rolls back in. On a better note, we did get a few fish! Prater got what he thought was a hogfish, and it turned out to be a huge grunt, he needs to learn to I. D. Fish! I was able to get a nice red snapper and a sheepshead. During our surface interval we were h/l'ing black sea basses left and right. Prater caught his first shark too. Anyways, I'm going to go make a sandwich. Wish we had a deck of cards, but as long as the batterys on my blackberry last, ill be happy.
I'm Hungry 11-17-2007, 08:05 PM Call Sea Tow! Are you stuck in the mud at the hairpin turn @ shellman bluff? Not that I've been there before:whistle: Glad you guys shot a few. Grays is really covered in Sea Bass huh.
I'm Hungry, thinking that the mud bar a mile offshore beats the hell out of my couch 200miles inshore
I don't think even sea tow can help, we are high and dry with no water within 20 feet. We are by shellmans bluff, about 300 yards from the marina, we can see it from where were at. Were by fishermans lodge marina.
I'm Hungry 11-17-2007, 09:29 PM I have been stuck in that exact same spot. Hope you guys get off the mud soon. This is the second week in a row that shellman's has had a boat overdue. Last weekend my buddy spent the night drifting, taking on water 5 miles offshore. Good luck, eat some sushi
Marcus 11-17-2007, 09:36 PM Too damn funny. What are you communicating with??

I had my Blackberry with me
Just letting you know, the tide finally rolled in at about 11:30 PM, and we were finally able to get out of the mud. :yay:

One of the guys at Fisheman's Lodge heard us ground the boat, and he knew it was a hard grounding. He came over in his skiff to see if we wanted to anchor up the boat, and ride back to the marina with him, which was really nice of them, but we has so much expensive diving gear on the boat, we just decided to wait it out.
I'm Hungry 11-18-2007, 09:10 AM J.B. did Bennie come see about you guys. He is a great guy. Glad you made it alright.
I don't know the guys name.....he has some wild curly blonde hair though.
Prater 11-18-2007, 11:04 AM Even with JB driving us up on the bank it was a great trip. We found a nice ledge at 56 foot that held all kinds of nice fish. I droped over the ledge and saw what I thought was a hog and hamered it, turned out to be a grunt. I missed a few grouper and then saw a nice gag coming towards me. I droped below the ledge and sat my gun up for a good shot. As he came over I had a great shot but my shaft bounced off just above his gill plate leaving a gash that really pissed him off. He swam in a circle a few times and then headed off. I was using a pencil tip that I felt needed to be sharpened as we were heading out but I did not have anything to sharpen it with. I really need a larger gun for this. My 42" was probably a bit small for that large of a fish. I was going to follow him but JB signaled that it was time to surface.

Bingo. If it's a AB biller or SeaHornet, contact Ray Odor and buy yourself a longer stock...cheap to fix your gun more into something useable.

Yeah, I know I need a larger gun. I am planning to build my own this winter. The short gun is for my freshwater low vis shooting when I get a chance to hit the local lake.
Prater 11-21-2007, 11:50 PM Here are a few pics from the trip. Plus the darn grunt I shot...

Relapse 11-22-2007, 03:15 AM How was the "grunt on the grill"?
He ended up leaving me the grunt to fillet.....the filet's look really nice, and from what I have looked up online, they're actually pretty decent to eat as well. I think I'm going to broil it when I'm ready to eat it....I'll elt you all know how it turns out!
Prater 11-22-2007, 10:27 AM I only took a couple of Shark steaks, I had another 4 days on the road before I would be home and did not want it to spoil.

Grunt is a gooood eating fish. I throw all the bigger ones in the box when fishing. They're perfect frying size and are tasty.
