I've seen some breathing devices on ebay recently that are suppose to expand the lungs so you can have deeper/longer dives for freediving. Are these a reliable source for longer breath holding? I'm asking because I want to get into freediving.

Expanding your lungs is not the answer. It is a matter of how effciently your body utilizes oxygen. A good cardio routine is a good place to start. followed by dynamic apena exercises. That is exercising while under breathhold, such as swimming laps while under water; which will buld CO2 tolerances. Do not do this alone!!!

Do stretches while holding your breath, and do some research on packing. Learn how to exercise your diaphraghm. Stay away from fatty foods and dairy products to increase blood flow. Those are the basics.

Cardio is the number one thing that will help you process that oxygen more efficiently, and if you really want to try one of those devices to make your diaphragm stronger then go to the auto parts store and get a piece of rubber fuel hose for a buck, Pinch the end with your fingers and breathe through the restriction. The only thing that makes the expand a lung expensive is the valve on the end. Hell, go to home depot and find a valve for that fuel hose in the plumbing dept and it is adjustable.

HEHE, funny side note. Wanderlei Silva trained with his nose plugged shut and breathed through a snorkel for the Liddell fight last night, and he got his ass kicked either way. I was rooting for Silva.

Yea the GSP fight was pretty much like me beating up on my little sister back in the day...

:whip:no more thread jack!!!!

Kooker, I forgot to add that if you want to get into freediving and be able to have fun doing it, you really should practice in the pool -with a spotter- to get your body used to functioning on one breath. That really helps you stay calm on the way up from the bottom and you are at the end of your breath (I.E. real uncomfortable in the stomach area from wanting to breathe). Practice really helps you control that.

I used a thing when I collapsed a lung to rehab and strengthen my cardio respiratory system called a reflex inspirometer. I am sure such a thing would help in some cases, but I have to wonder would it help any more than just having a healthy person doing cardio and exercises as previously suggested. From my experience these things are mostly of use with people who are bedridden/have cardiorespiratory trauma etc.

Something I have found over many many many years of doing all sorts of sports and skill oriented tasks like shooting is that the very very best form of practice is to simply do what it is you are trying to do. Sometimes breaking it down into steps helps in the fine tuning aspect, but to get really good, you need to do it like you are doing it for real. For example, shooting a simple fixed target is not as good as shooting on a pop-up combat range. And neither one is as good as combat shooting experience. All will help, and it probably makes good sense to take them in steps, but to be the best, practice what you want to do, as you would do it. In the military we call it "train like you fight".

So, if you want to learn to hold your breath while swimming underwater...well, do that, as much as your body will safely tolerate and remain healthy.

Thats the thing. I have no one to practice with lol. I live out here by brandon and my friend is being gay and doesn't want to get in the water cuz " it's cold" anyways, I want to get into freediving. haha It sucks and all I have is a 14 ft. jon boat. After looking back at it, I wish my dad still had his 2510 proline. Twin 200's "sigh" :(

HAHAHA I LIVE IN VALRICO!!! I need a pool spotter also. I have been trying to hit the pool at least 3 times a week before the weekend cause that's "gametime". My bro lives in St Pete so it is inconvenient for him to come out here all the time. I live south of 60 on Mt Carmel Rd. about 3/4mi in Brentwood Hills. You know where the Home Depot is right before you hit Valrico? Lemme know when you want to hook up. I carry all of my gear to the pool cause it is kinda cold. The pool maintainer and I talk on a regular basis so he is totally cool with us wearing full gear and doing statics. The pool is only 50ft long so you have to do laps for dynamic. Making the turn burns a lot of O2 for me for some reason. Dont worry about your gear getting faded there is hardly any chlorine in the water now. So lemme know.

Dude I'm in plant city. I'm totally down. I have all the gear, but have yet to get out spearing. I would like to take some trips also. I live like 15 min. away. PM me your number if you want and im down with practice. Do you go to brandon swim and tennis? Their pool is 15 ft. I've done some messing around there.

Underwater Hockey? A buddy of mine does it, and he says it has helped his apnea performance noticably....

like they all have said before me, it's time in the water that gets us there...

The best breathing device I have used is called a self contained underwater breathing apparatus. It alows for a very deep and long dives. Works great!
