Newport News sucks. My cousin lives there. The water is too dirty to dive there unless you go to the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel and even there its questionable at time. YOu can only dive high tide also which lasts about 1.5 hours.

Pm if you have any questions. I know where you are getting the job too.

Tide doesnt really matter. Dive CBBT all the time. Vis is definetly challenging (5-10 feet), but it makes you a better hunter and is still fun. Routinely get fish in 5-10lb range and larger when cobia come through. Once off a few miles water clears up greatly and can be top to bottom.

Roger, I'm leaving in May. Got a call from Northrop Grumman and they offered me a job designing aircraft carriers. Kinda hard to turn that down when you're 20 years old and tryin to build a jam up resume. I want to be a mechanical engineer and this is a huge step for me.

Ok, back to the subject. What about grouper, snapper, hogs, lobster? How far out do ya'll go to shoot +100' and how's the vis that far out?

I'm movin by myself so I'm not goin to know anybody, and I know absolutely nothin about the area.

I grew up there. Tide doesnt matter? How long have you been diving at chesapeake bay bridge tunnel? You can dive the islands when the tide is moving fast but there isnt that much fish. All the good fish are on the pilings anyways and that area can only be dove on the slack tide. Top to bottom vis is also rare.

no grouper, no snapper, no hogs. Lobster can be found in deep wrecks.

Vis can get good if you 15 miles out which is like 50+ ft. Chesapeake light tower. You have to dive the wrecks about 30 miles out to get to 100' unless you dive the ship channels which i wouldnt recommend..heh

Damn, how far do you have to go to be in the Atlantic?

How far south do I have to go to shoot some of those monster hogs?

30 miles is about what we like to dive here. Anybody have a boat and make regular trips out to those deeper wrecks?

I'm gonna miss planted pines and good fish.

Hey,
Check out my response to your post on spearboard. That site is more commonly used by spearos in our area. You really should come to one of our meetings for our club. You will learn tons about the area as well as make some new friends. We are also going to have a professional freedive trainer come in and do some lessons in the future, which is always good. The main problem with our area, is you need a boat to get anywhere good. Luckily we have a very generous member of the MAF club who allows certified and trusted members to use his 28' Parker. So there are trips going out several times a week for most of the spring and summer as weather permits. We are also working on some bluewater trips for yellowfin, mahi, wahoo, and marlin. Omer is also a sponsor of our club and we get deals and great advice from them. Most of us are freedivers up this way too, and the black grouper, hog, and pompano world records reside with one of our members. You can get all of the fish you listed below with just a 3 hour drive to Hatteras too. Let me know when you come into town, and I will give you all the info on our club.

I had top to bottom vis every time but the last at the tower this year. I have caught 5-10 lb togs and sheepshead all day long at all times in tide. You just have to know where to look. I routinely spear for 3 hrs + so the 1.5 hr window is really what I was debating. It is not as bad here as you are making it seem. Pilings are tough unless its slack tide, but I have a Jetski that I am going to use to drift dive which should be interesting. Islands are easier to dive at "slack tide" (not the same as high tide), but the fish are always there. Just takes some more work. I travel often to Hawaii and Puerto Rico, whcih I do prefer, but there is still a large variety of situations, a huge variety of fish, and alot of fun to be had spearfishing in VA. One of our members even saw a 80lb+ GG at the CBBT this summer, which by the way is legal to shoot in VA.

Congrats on the job, Kody.

Enjoy the new scenery while you can.

Those pines will be here when you get back.

And northern girls are warm.

See you in a couple of weeks.

The best section for consistently finding large hogfish begins at the southern half of NC (offshore30+mi) waters.

Read my first post again. Top to bottom is at tower, 5'-10' is at CBBT. CBBT is not bad at any tide (The Jist of it all). But getting off topic and tired of arguing. Congrats Kody. Hope to see you out at the water and maybe at one of our spearfishing meetings. Best wishes.

Hell yeah, I will definately be gettin in the club. I won't know anybody at all so that will help me out a lot.

Spearit, I think I will be visiting you guys a lot. I need to get some rates from you.

See you guys in May, and thanks for the info.

Roger, just let me know when you are coming up.

I lived in Va. Beach for 3 1/2 years,..Striper and flounder H/L is off the chain,..never speared there,..I spent an average of 3 days a week on the CBBT and the water always looked dirty,...if you do get out try for the
Taug Taug around the tunnel rocks,..they are ugly as sin but very good eating. 17 1/2 miles of pilons holds a hell of a lot of flounder!!

Like this? ;) If you get 10-12 ft vis, its unbelievable how many fish you can see.

Holy Shit! I pumped now, flounder like that and possible bluewater trips. Hell yeah! I'm still gonna miss the FLA but i guess it won't be too bad up there.

Hook and line fishing is good. I still have a commercial license and i go back every summer to catch Striped Bass. Two people hook and lining with live bait. 900lbs.

Even though florida has a lot less fish, its more fun because of how the fish react. Its more of a challange and takes more technique. You can swim right up to fish and blast them. They dont move too much.

Well I guess I'll have to get back to hook and line a little more. You can't shoot stripers in VA can you?

nope. It sucks because ive seen 50 pounders within 5 ft of me. Ive speared lots of cobia on the bridge tunnel. On average, they are much bigger than florida cobia.

I been diving the bridge tunnel for over 14 years. ive seen one shark freediving and it came super close since you cant see far anyways. There used to be so many cobia that it was uncommon to come back without one. Nobody really dives the bridge tunnel. If they do, they usually dive the tunnel where the rocks are. Thats were the least amount of fish are. Over 14 years, ive seen very few divers. Its rare to see another diver.
