View Full Version : Power head - Quick Slip On Powerhead and belt pouch for 9/32(7mm) or 5/16(8mm) shafts
Speareasy 07-28-2007, 07:09 PM This power head is designed to be used as shark defense. It is a Quick Slip On single use powerhead made of aluminum. It holds a sealed in 7.62 X 39 Remington 145 grain round (AK-47 round). This powerhead is spear actuated, there is no moving firing pin and as such it is legal to carry on one's person or in the car. The powerhead is deployed when the tip of the spear strikes the primer through a water tight seal on impact with the shark. The spear hole is machined with very little tolerance and as such does not allow play when the shaft is fired from the speargun. Common misfiring which is due to the spear point striking off the primer is non existent. Fits a 9/32(7mm) or 5/16(8mm) shaft. $20 each. Neoprene belt pouch that holds 2 powerheads $15 each.
Features:
- Very powerful round is enough to kill shark depending on shot placement or at minimum severely wound it to the point of discouraging it from returning.
- Very quick to mount on spear, especially if used with belt pouch
- Sharp edge on the front end helps it catch on the shark on angled shots.
- Built in O ring for snug fit. The powerhead seats tightly enough on spear that if target is missed the powerhead will not come off due to inertia when the spear is stopped short by the shooting line. Comes in two sizes to fit a 9/32(7mm) or 5/16(8mm) shaft.
- Machined on grooves provide grip when mounting on spear with bulky gloves.
- Water escape hole for easy insertion of the spear.
- Completely waterproof, the round is sealed inside on both ends and as such requires no maintenance other than a fresh water rinse.
Speareasy 07-28-2007, 07:11 PM New feature, the PH are now coated with a clear coating. This will keep them looking shiny and new, aluminum will normally look dull grey in color after exposure to salt water. You may even toss the PH and let it fall through the water to flash in that big one that just won't come close :D
I do know from personal experience and have received feedback from more than one buyer that the PPD they own had failed at the moment it was needed. I call mine a quick slip-on PH to distinguish it from the PPD. I suggest to those of you who own one to test it before you need it. While there is a comfort element in presuming you are protected I personally would rather know than guess and am willing to invest a little time to find out. In all fairness the PPD's I was talking about are not shaftslinger's, I haven't tested those yet.
Sasquatch 09-05-2007, 12:20 PM I got mine and they look great. They fit well on my stinger freeshaft, but because they don't have the fuel hose, won't work on my line shaft with tip.
Too bad you're not selling more of these, they really do look nice.
Speareasy 09-05-2007, 01:00 PM Thanks for the positive review. A screw on tip is probably neither a 9/32 nor a 5/16 in diameter so it will not accept the PH.
I still have some left in both 9/32 and 5/16.
I needed couple of them so do you ship them cod?
Speareasy 09-05-2007, 10:59 PM Sorry no cod, Paypal only https://www.paypal.com/ You don't need to open a paypal account to pay someone but you do need a credit card.
I have a paypal account at ht e ebay
i will send you PM with my number give me a call
thanks Kaan
Wayward Son 09-05-2007, 11:11 PM How do these do on Sea Hornet shafts? Not sure of the size, I think they're 6.5mm?
Speareasy 09-05-2007, 11:23 PM There is a bit of tolerance because of the O ring but I'd have to try it to say for sure.
Seaweed 09-05-2007, 11:44 PM Sea hornet is 5/16 which is 7.94 mm. I measured my 5/16 and it's 8mm.
Are you selling them for Tito, or just raising the price $5??
Ed Walker 09-05-2007, 11:55 PM I was gonna ask about that. They look just like the ones I got from Tito a few years back. He was easy to work with and seemed like a good guy.
BTW-how long do you suppose those things stay good? Mine are about 3 years old but were double wrapped in my vaccum sealer so I dont think water ever gets to them.
I guess for the price and the benefit of them, I should just get off the wallet and buy a couple fresh ones. The shafts Ive gotten the past few years vary from 6.5 to 7.5 mm. (I prefer 7's but availablity issue caused me to get some of 3 different sizes. Now I cant tell the difference. How much leeway is there in these PH's openings?
Sweet marketing pics. Looks like something Gerald might have had a hand in.
Speareasy 09-06-2007, 12:37 AM These are made by Tito or should I say assembled, they are actually made by a machine shop then packed. Regardless, Tito is not available to do a marketing shpiel on this or any other forum as I suggested to him he should. It's too bad as he would be a great contributor, I don't know why he doesn't.
I've questioned myself why the hell I bother selling these as the profit is not worth my time to go to the post office. The reasons I could think of are; that I still carry a grudge for having had my money taken once by the infamous PPD, the fact that my dive buddies would not have bothered acquiring them if I didn't have them readily available (this makes me feel safer) and also I meet some new friends. So you guys better be nice to me or I won't bother selling them any more :D
I'll check on the 6.5 and 7.5mm shafts and post back.
Ed, instead of buying new ones shoot something and reload them. You'll kill two birds with one stone, you'll find out if they're still good after 3 years and save money on a new one.
Jaw, stay in school so you don't end up peddling powerheads.
Gerald 09-06-2007, 11:24 AM These are made by Tito. However Tito is not readily available to do a marketing shpiel on this or any other forum as I suggested to him he should. It's too bad as he would be a great contributor, I don't know why he doesn't.
Anyone that has spent any time at Tito's can see the guy is just way to busy with his family, gun making and actual diving to have an active part in these forums. Word travels fast though, and I am sure he gets plenty of business from referals. I sorta see him as the east coast Mori. His wood Euro guns rock also.
Muddy Waters 09-06-2007, 04:31 PM Speareasy,
Your statement to Ed implies that these can be reloaded, do you re-waterproof the new round with vacuum sealer or what? Also, is it preferable to shoot these by powering down to 1 band-as many suggest--or can you just let it rip with 3-5/16's from a Wong 55 magnum?
Speareasy 09-06-2007, 05:15 PM If the aluminum is not cracked from the detonation (this is an AK-47 cartridge not no .357), you will see if it is cracked, you can reload by inserting another cartridge and sealing both openings. The outside opening which you can see in the pic is hard black epoxy, the inside which is what gets pierced by the spear point is a soft rubbery sealant.
I think you meant 3 9/16 bands? One reason I see to power down is if you think you might not hit the target. I've fired a 9/32 shaft powered with 2 5/8 bands three times and missed the shark, the PH did not come off the spear. I don't know if it would behave the same way with 3 5/8 bands but I'm sure that with 3 9/16 it will stay on. Unlike a Beco style PH when used with an inadequate spring the force of the the spear leaving the gun is not enough to detonate the PH.
Muddy Waters 09-06-2007, 05:32 PM I actually meant 3 5/8's bands. Good explanation--I have been told before to power down to keep the force of the water from making the PH go off leaving the gun--but that was using a stainless 223 true PH that did have one of those springs that you spoke of. I am going to send a PM--I want 2 for a 9/32's shaft. Many thanks,
Speareasy 09-06-2007, 05:58 PM Thanks Muddy.
I see a lot of people posting when they send a pm, I understand that it is in case the recepient doesn't check their messages. This forum has a neat little feature that will alert you with a popup box on your screen once you receive a pm. Go to User CP and click on options. There you will see where to put a check mark to activate this feature, I find it useful.
