View Full Version : Made a new freedive spearfishing video...
ApneaSpearo 01-21-2008, 03:54 AM After 6 months without a camera I finally managed to collect some new spearfishing footage in December and put it into a video. My accuracy in the video isn't that great (it's the gun, I swear ) but there's a part with a moray that I think is pretty cool. Here's a link if you want to check it out (it's 47MB):

Gamble 01-21-2008, 09:14 AM Nice work!! Keep-em comming always enjoy your videos!
joelovesfishin 01-21-2008, 09:33 AM That was great! Watching that Morey come out and eat that hogfish was CRAZY!!!
jstbecauz 01-21-2008, 10:23 AM Awesome! Thanks for the video.
Man it looks like that gun has alot of recoil, I wonder if mine does I just dont realize it when I am shooting it. What kind of video setup do you have, where is it mounted? I know it is probably on the gun.
settingsteel 01-21-2008, 11:32 AM very cool vid, thx for sharing
pantoja 01-21-2008, 11:40 AM That was great! Watching that Morey come out and eat that hogfish was CRAZY!!!
don't think it was a hog fish.
nice video kriss.
ApneaSpearo 01-21-2008, 11:58 AM don't think it was a hog fish.
nice video kriss.
You're right Sergio, it was a mutton. The buddy I was diving with shot the mutton and brought it to the surface but was distracted while braining the fish and it got away, so he yelled to me to make a dive on him. I turned on my camera and followed the wounded fish until he stopped down next to the reef, I was about to pull the trigger when the moray came out, I couldn't believe that I caught it on tape.
ApneaSpearo 01-21-2008, 12:01 PM Awesome! Thanks for the video.

Thanks. I think the camera exaggerates the recoil when I shoot b/c it doesn't have much recoil, although I do tend to overpower my gun a bit when I have the extra weight of the camera and mount on the gun. The camera is mounted on the back of the gun, I'll try to take some pictures of the setup later.
jeepshapes 01-21-2008, 01:02 PM nice vid. thanks for sharing
cmfish 01-21-2008, 01:22 PM Great video Kris!
brothertodd 01-21-2008, 02:06 PM Very Sweet, I liked the boat ride, inhale exhale bit. Good build up. What do you have invested in your camera set up?
Marco 01-21-2008, 09:17 PM Do you have any pictures on how you mount the camera to the gun?
Teh Wicked 01-21-2008, 09:39 PM Great footage!!!
That Moray footage was crazy
Griswold 01-21-2008, 11:21 PM Thanks, great work. I too want camera and mount pics/info.
Rinaldo 01-22-2008, 12:36 AM Chris,
I have complimented very few videos and that isn't for a lack of quantity. I usually can't see what the shooters aiming at or I get dizzy watchign the camera shake and move.
You have honestly created the best video I've ever seen. The editing is spot on and I loved the variety of species. Even the last "Exhale" at the end was perfect !
Great Video bud.
Impressive !
Number1StunNer 02-03-2008, 10:59 AM WOW KRIS YOU OUTDID YOURSELF WITH THIS VIDEO!!!!!!!!
GREAT LIGHTING, GREAT FOOTAGE. As Rinaldo says, everybody puts together their own crappy pieced together film clips. This however, was awesome!
Thanks for taking the time to share it with us.
stevemc1 02-03-2008, 01:00 PM Very well put together film! That is wild that you caught the moray eating the fish! Keep it up! What camera/housing are you using? I assume a digital camera since it is mounted on your gun butt.
snowstopsspears 02-03-2008, 01:08 PM Nicely done, Kris. My dad also gave his seal of approval to the vid. I'm definitely looking forward to the next time that we get a chance to dive. Are you going to come out to visit The Farm?
Andrew
Red Tide 02-03-2008, 10:29 PM Very cool. Nice vis too.....
Southern Cross 02-04-2008, 11:18 AM Nice video. Please post pics of your video rig.
Thanks
Big Perm 02-04-2008, 01:12 PM Great footage and thanks for sharing.
Griswold 02-04-2008, 05:50 PM I don't know what surfUNC's mount looks like, but I decided to give it a shot and this is what I came up with. The plate is starboard and there are threaded inserts in the bottom of the gun's butt. Looking forward to giving it a try. Simple, but should work.
Kooker19 02-04-2008, 06:03 PM What kind of camera is the griswold and how much do they normally cost?
Griswold 02-04-2008, 06:20 PM It's a SeaLife ReefMaster Mini cost about $300 and doesn't need a housing down to 130'. I see it as an entry level underwater camera. I've been happy with it so far, but I hear that I shouldn't expect anything good from the company if it breaks. If I were shopping now, I'd probably get one of the new Cannon's with a housing.
ApneaSpearo 02-04-2008, 06:29 PM I'm glad you guys liked the video, it was fun to put together, I'll try to upload big versions of my previous videos in the near future. As for the "inhale exhale" thing, I wanted to mention that I blatantly stole that from Hawaii Skin Diver magazine and is in no way anything original or creative on my part.
I'm sorry it has taken so long for me to get pictures of my camera mount, but here goes...
The camera is a Canon Elph SD500 digital camera, you can get them pretty cheap on Ebay now, probably around $100, and I use a 2GB SD card ($20) which gives me about 17 minutes of footage each time I go out. I also have an underwater housing from Canon, but I'm not sure if I can recommend it completely, it leaks sometimes and Canon has already had to replace it once for that reason.
I've used several mounts and each time try to make them a little bit better. This most recent one has a great vantage point but has some drawbacks: it's heavy, makes the gun a little lopsided, and looks like a 3rd grader put it together.
The mount is essentially two pieces, this is so that I can take the camera on and off quickly and easily. I have a thin piece of aluminum attached to my speargun barrel with two stainless hose clamps. I have two SS screws coming up through pre-drilled holes in the aluminum plate with wingnuts on the ends.
The camera is mounted to another thin aluminum plate that was bent into an "S" shape. It's attached by a screw that goes through the plate and goes into the standard mount on the bottom of the camera housing. I have some zip ties on it to prevent it from unscrewing, they are not ideal but do the job. The bottom of the "S" plate has two holes drilled in it that fit over the screws mounted on the gun, with the wingnuts holding the "S" plate in place on the gun.
Like I said, it looks pretty crappy, but it does the job rather well, let me know if you guys have any other questions, and thanks for checking out the video.

THANK YOU
Skinydiver 02-04-2008, 08:51 PM The previous replies have been right on the money, but what I like the most about this video is that fact that it shows exactly what and why we love freedive spearfishing. This video is up there with fishkilla productions, and in my opinion is better because I am a freedive spearo. I still have all of fishkilla vids and I watch them frequently, but I had a smile on my face throughout this entire vid. Great editing, and man that eel owned that snapper. haha.
Thank you dude. If you upload this to youtube it will be on my myspace page very soon. If you don't, do you mind if I do? Bad ass dude! Thank you.

Thanks Skiny, all my videos are already up on youtube, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/ApneaSpearo
Skinydiver 02-05-2008, 10:27 PM Thanks a lot. It's on my myspace (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=42495732) If you want to check it out. I'll be watching the rest of your vids soon. My buddy just made me a camera mount for my gun, so I'll be making some similar videos soon. Hopefully they will be half as cool as yours.

dive4food 02-08-2008, 11:35 AM It's 32 degrees with 4 inches of snow on the ground here. That video just made my day.
Ed Walker 02-22-2008, 11:38 PM Yep, two thumbs up. The moray thing was pretty cool.

wahoo 03-05-2008, 03:36 PM I agree with everything said. That was a nice 3 minute break from work. It made me want to go diving sooooooo bad!!!!!!!!!!!:toast:
Prodigal Son 03-05-2008, 05:23 PM Great vid! Thanks for posting it. You're very good with that gun. It looked like it had a lot of recoil, but you made some nice shots that would've been probably misses for me. How deep were those fish taken? it looked like you were in 30-40' of water.
ApneaSpearo 03-06-2008, 02:30 PM Thanks for the compliments, I'm in the process of editing my previous videos so that people can download them in high quality, I'll try to add them to the thread soon.

I have my fair share of misses too, they just don't make it into the videos :D The shallowest fish were taken around 20' (the two red groupers) and the deepest was the first yellow jack which was on tennaco towers at 65-70'. The rest of the fish were somewhere in between. Thanks for checking it out.
Very cool Video.....
Spanishfly,
That is one cool picture in your avatar. Whoever that diver is in the picture, my wife finds him irresistibly sexy:awink:.
Welcome to the forum:thumbup:

charlie is sleeping 03-10-2008, 01:17 AM What software do you use to edit your video?
Great stuff.
dilligaf 03-24-2008, 10:28 PM I think one of the greatest shots in the clip was the green morey eel ambushing the mango from under the ledge- belongs on discovery channel.
Best video I've seen so far, You put the speargun hunter to shame, if you've ever seen that show. I love the ending surface swim.
Enzo:smthumbup:
catfish 04-21-2008, 10:49 AM that was great. It's neat that you can show people what you are seeing. Everyone thinks I'm full of ---- when I tell a story
