I'm considering a vacation to NC for some bluewater spearfishing this summer. What month would you locals say is the best for a shot at pelagics? I'm thinking mid to late July.

Also, what would you recommend as far as diving spots. Not looking for any secret numbers, but was hoping someone could save me from wasting time on unproductive public numbers. From what I hear the Proteus and Tarpon can be good. Any other wrecks or deep ledges worth looking into?

Any advice on what I can expect that time of year as far as species would also be greatly appreciated.

Charlestondiving.com I believe might be your best bet.

Anytime in the summer should be good. I'd talk with some of the local capitans and see what they say. Hatteras is probably your best bet for true bluewater hunting. There are dozens and dozens of great wrecks in that area. Talk to Captain Andy, he runs the the Good Times. He took us out during the Omer BW Open and was a great captain. Also check out the results of the past Omer tourneys and the different boats involved. All those captains know how to operate a boat for spearos.

I forgot to mention that we will have our own boat so will not be using any charter service, which is why we were looking for specific spots to try or at least spots to avoid.

Any of the wrecks off Hatteras will have fish, but for bluewater, check the sea surface temps and look where the good stuff intersects.
