Sorry if this is a basic question, but I'm new to the tournament scene.

I see that sponsors can give cash sponsorships- how does that work? Does it go to pay for general funding of the tournament, the prize table, or what? I assume that those who give product- it goes right to the prize table, but am curious about other forms of sponsorship.

We have been fortunate to maintain a very reliable group of sponsors over the years. Some businesses donate cash, some services, others donate prizes. Many of the club members are also sponsors. The SPO tournament costs quite a bit of money to host. The cash goes to cover those costs, the stage rental, the trophies, numerous prizes, sponsor shirts, shooter shirts, hotel rooms for the organizers to work and store equipment, etc. The prizes go to the table. Carrie Renner(past SPO Hogfish winner) of Big Fish Graphics(727-525-5010) does all of our sponsor boards and displays/banners/graphics at the event as part of her sponsorship.

The club pretty much always comes out of the tournament with the same or less money than it started with. Not one single club member or tournament organizer/worker/volunteer earns, makes, profits, or pockets a single dime from the SPO. Most spearfishing tournaments are run like this, with zero ROI .

I can think of only one tournament that all of the profits goes in one person's pocket and I choose not to participate in that one for those reasons. :whistle:

<looking over the top of my RayBan shooter's glasses>

I hear this whole SPUC organization is quite a charitable group, unlike the swine at that other profit-driven evil empire of a bulletin board that apparently has something to do with spearing. If you've ever seen the massive prize table at a St Pete Open, you'll see that they have not only piled it full of prizes donated by the sponsors, but went out and bought enough prizes so that every diver that turns in the smallest legal fish can go home with a prize.

<big drag on cigarette> .....

There will be no red-haired incarnation of Richard Nixon running this tournament! Every bit of cash collected goes straight to the good people who enter, and to the basic costs of operation. I've spent some time verbally abusing these questionable personalitites who run this whole deal, and they continue to prove to me that they are good folks running a non-profit organization. At first glance they do look like a bunch of drunken pig-herders, but don't judge the book by the cover.

<another drag on cigarette>

They are more like mullet-fisherman that have found a strange new religion, and have dedicated their lives to the betterment of spearfishing, or at least the establishment of an event that cannot be accurately described by common men. Look into their eyes and you'll not only see images of your abusive grandfather in a crazed ether binge, but a group of hardcore spearos that want nothing more than for you to dive, shoot fish, get drunk, be happy, and win big prizes.

If one of them comes at you with a knife in his teeth, it might just be to help clean your catch. You decide.
