I literally just saw the commercial for this. It seems to be a cheap alternative to an EPIRB (relatively speaking). Here is a link, check it out. http://www.findmespot.com/explorespot/spotmessenger.aspx

It seems to be a cheap alternative to an EPIRB (relatively speaking). Here is a link, check it out. http://www.findmespot.com/explorespot/spotmessenger.aspx The service fees eventually cost as much or more than an epirb. When you calculate it against an epirb with battery service life it really isnt cheaper. The technology is also not as good. It is a good concept and hopefully as the technology or competion progresses the servce fees will come down a little making it a truly cheaper alternative. Divin' fool 03-25-2008, 06:21 PM $100 per year for coverage..... that's expensive :slap: Teh Wicked 03-25-2008, 07:03 PM What does EPIRB stand for, I know what it is basically but I dont know the exact definition of the accronym. fiz 03-25-2008, 07:14 PM What does EPIRB stand for, I know what it is basically but I dont know the exact definition of the accronym. www.google.com:smthumbup::D Spear One 03-25-2008, 07:15 PM What does EPIRB stand for, I know what it is basically but I dont know the exact definition of the accronym. If enough people use the cost is bound to go down. Grauwer 03-25-2008, 09:39 PM I liked the price till i saw this http://www.life-raft.com/product.asp?Product_Id=50050&d_Id=9735&l1=&l2= STITCH 03-25-2008, 11:45 PM I liked the price till i saw this http://www.life-raft.com/product.asp?Product_Id=50050&d_Id=9735&l1=&l2= That's not a satellite EPIRB. Last conversation about those, the deal breaking quote was "all they do is give your family a body to bury" (something to that extent) Honestly for divers, that type is probably just as good because we aren't that far off the shore most of the time. I'm sold on the idea of the exact location of my in distressed ass is sent to the guys that are looking for me. Grauwer 03-26-2008, 12:02 AM Thanks for posting the link I will look into it more, it has peaked my interest Chris Capt. Bill 03-26-2008, 01:42 AM I was approached by the sales rep to carry these EPIRBs and I am in the process of evaluating the use, projected sales and cost for me to buy in with the minimum order. Thanks for all the research and info on this item. If I learn anything more or different than many have posted, I will include the info to this thread. NSEARCH 03-26-2008, 09:26 AM In my dry box I carry the McMurdo Fastfind Plus GPS PLB (http://www.mcmurdo.co.uk/products/product.html?product_type=2&product_sector=4&product=7). I also have the dive canister for it which allows me to take it on dives. The canister has a notch in it that allows your tank strap through it allowing it to be attached much like a small pony bottle. This is the only PLB I could find that is GPS enabled, water proof, floats, and could be carried with me on dives. STITCH 03-26-2008, 08:29 PM Yeah they are "waterproof" to one meter for 30 min. I was planning on double sealing it in two vaccum bags and just sticking in my BC pocket. I wonder if the pressure would be able to push the buttons? Any thoughts? hurricanebk 03-26-2008, 11:02 PM anyone actually have one? I'm thinking about buying one, hopefully i'll use it more for the track my progress feature than anything else but it looks like a nice thing to have. Stealthdiver 05-19-2008, 05:44 PM Actually if more people use them the cost will go up ! This is America dude ! The only way they will go down is if people don't use them and they need to sell them bad ! Nailman67 05-19-2008, 06:04 PM I product is supported by GlobalStar and their satelittes have been a problem for service for a few years now. ArmorDave 05-19-2008, 06:53 PM I product is supported by GlobalStar and their satelittes have been a problem for service for a few years now. Made McKay marine buy my GP1600 GlobalStar phone back because they did not work. FYI!! Not that it's the last word on the subject, but read my post "SPOT Satellite Personal tracker". They tell me it is not the same system that has had stat phone problems (even though they are both operated by Globalstar). So far I have no reason not to belive that it works, but I'll be testing it. While an EPIRB might be less expensive in the long run, expense isn't the real issue for us. What sold me on it was my family's peace of mind and ability to track my location, and me to send "I'm OK" signals, or "Help" to my freinds when I need less than a GoastGuard rescue, when I am overdue. And my pesce of mind when I've got a diver late getting back the the boat (at dusck in 2' seas). threw-er-back 05-21-2008, 09:07 AM I liked the price till i saw this http://www.life-raft.com/product.asp?Product_Id=50050&d_Id=9735&l1=&l2= Chris these were high dollar till the 406mhz? came out these are RAPIDLY becoming obsolete as I understand it..
