View Full Version : Nose bleeds on ascent (Scuba). How common is it?
Narc'd 04-04-2008, 11:00 AM As of lately I seem to be getting more and more nose bleeds on my ascents. I didn't used to get them. I always watch my dive computer on the way up and don't let it go in the red. Most dives are under 80ft (usually inshore 45-50 ft).
after diving for many years this has just started happening recently. Wondering if anyone else out there gets them and why?
Thanks
primalpete 04-04-2008, 11:37 AM They are common. Do you have trouble clearing on your descents?
swampthing 04-04-2008, 12:11 PM got them a lot when i first started scuba diving. like primalpete said, i usually had trouble with restriction during clearing while descending. as the issues with equalization went away, so did my nose bleeds.
Narc'd 04-04-2008, 12:20 PM Never any issues clearing, I start when I hit the water and every 2-5 seconds on the way down. Seems to clear by itself on the way up no problem. Been diving since 96. A lot more over the last year (100 dives in last 6 or 7 months) but the last 4 or 5 dives I have been coming up bleeding like a stuck pig... no sinus pain just bloody as hell... I think my ascents are maybe a little on the hot side, I am usually in the mid yellow but never in the red on the dive computer ascent monitor and normally do about a 2 minute safety stop at 15 foot or so...
very perplexing and a bit unnerving...
Thanks
chuckd 04-04-2008, 02:35 PM PM me if you want to get a Cat scan of the sinuses to make sure you don't have a mass or sinusitis.

Thanks Charlie, I might just do that
You probably aggravated a capilary in the sinus/nose cavity, and with pressure change it bursts. *Try* not diving for a few weekends for it to heal right. Good luck
Gunny 04-06-2008, 10:44 AM Get it cauterzed (sp)

Ummm.... Nooooo....
Usually try to dive at least 10+ dives a week :D I am more concerned with my gills drying out than the bloody nose. I do like the cauterizing idea though
Did 5 dives to 50ft yesterday, bled on every one but not badly. only one dive today, just a hint of blood, very annoying!
Teh Wicked 04-08-2008, 02:27 AM Doesn't HuntinFish have this same problem??
Prater 04-10-2008, 01:55 AM You may be drying out the sinus and causing some irritation. I know breathing very dry air can cause the same symptoms.
ScottL 04-10-2008, 10:44 AM My nose bleeds like crazy everytime I go diving.
:(
Narc'd 04-10-2008, 11:02 AM Chuckd checked it out and it appears to be a mild case of Sinusitis. Said there can be a small infection in there and you not even know about it so takin some antibiotics an see what happens....
Thanks Chuckd!
Keysdivers 04-10-2008, 07:57 PM Do you happen to use sudafed or similar antihistimines?
These may help clearing but at the same time attribute to this problem. If so don't worry.
Teh Wicked 04-11-2008, 01:34 AM Chuckd is da man! plus he is a rather smart individual...
Stealthdiver 05-19-2008, 05:41 PM Like the governor Jesse said " I ain't got time to bleed " Who knows what movie ? Then hed died soon after so, maybe you should look into it !
inletsurf 05-29-2008, 05:23 PM Afrin works great. I have dove with a full blown cold and a sinus infection after taking afrin. I used to get nosebleeds, but many years of diving cleared it out. Still, some days I can shoot to the bottom, others I have to take my time. I do have bad sinuses. Im actually getting a CT of my sinuses next week, but for other reasons. Anyway, try afrin for a short term solution if your infection returns. Works faster than sudafed. I always keep a bottle in my dry box.
junior 05-31-2008, 12:51 PM I have the same problem, but my teeth will sometimes go numb from the pressure in my maxillary (I think) sinuses. Sucks dude.
