I'd say 90% of the time I just drop all the way to the bottom and ease along, using structure for cover as I move. I'll pick my way along until I see a honey hole, then I might do some static drops(10% of the time) and try and draw the fish out of cover.

I've noticed other experienced freedivers all seem to have a method that works for them.. Some stay midwater scanning down as they move, others do 90% static, lay on the bottom drops and 10% moving stalks.

What other methods have yall used with success?

Well Gamble uses the evasive shark maneuver. The bull flys in scaring the shit outta the fish, their distracted and dont know he's there and he shoots em.:moon: OH Pink camo skirt ..works everytime at least he says it does

True dat...... never had much time to wait for the fish to come to me.....it would be nice though, maybe if I wasnt always swimming I would have more time to sit and wait..... I'll have to try that one of these days but what i've been doing has been working fine...

Ever since I've been in NZ, I've been working more on my aspetto dives and I gotta say, it works. The bigger specimens always sit just out of vis and the longer you wait, the more of them come in. Trying to sit still for 30 seconds at 65 feet is tough!

My ADD flairs up something fierce when I try Aspetto.
I usually place my hips into the sand and throw up as much sand as I possible can, then I swim a foot or two out of the sand and wait for fish to come darting into the cloud...

I just go down and throw up sand, scratch rock, or grunt. I have also found that spoons work too. What works better is if you buy a bunch of cheap silverware at a goodwill or something. Use the spoons and the forks, just bend the handle off. That works the best. It puts off lots of vibration and flashes on the way down. Predator type fish hit it all the time. Hiding in crevases or what not works as well. Just be waiting for the fish to come over you. Though I have never fished in the waters of the east coast where the fish are dumb and massive. So all you might need to be able to do is drop, point, and shoot.

You guys put too much thought into it.

Just go down and shoot the fish. Remember that this is coming from a bubble blower.:)

RZ, you are actually one of the divers that got me thinking about this... I watched you work a spot for more than thirty minutes one time(Freediving/40'). We were out on Greg's boat and evidently you found a honey hole because you finally came back with a pretty decent stringer, all from that same spot.

There's definitely something to be said for laying still, aspetto, or whatever you want to call it. It can bring those spooky fish back in that blow off certain spots.

Depends mostly on my chance of taking different species.

Example- if I know there is muttons in the area and there is a slight current I'll lay aspetto. Muttons come in as well do Mangos and groupers, AJ's and Jacks

If I am tracking or looking I hang 20 ft above to see as much as possible and drift with the current.
