I got a call from Eric Friedrichsen whom most of you know as (Freedro) a little while ago to see if I was interested in diving with him over there. He told me that they had been killing the big mahi, tuna, wahoo and roosterfish. When I got there they had just had a bad storm come by and it caused a really bad coldwater upwelling and really screwed the viz and fishing up. The surface temp was 80 and when you went down 10ft in was in the low 60's. The marlin seemed to everywhere but the other pelagics were gone. We still worked the shoreline for other species but the colwater was killing us there too. I had a great time shooing many species I've never taken before like all sorts of parrotfish, mexican hogfish, pargo's to 15lbs, milkfish and groupers. We took most of the fish into town at night and ate like kings and dranks till our kidneys hurt.
What was funny was Eric was telling me about how the leopard grouper was really spooky and could be tough to get. The first spot we get in at and on the second drop I spot this nice grouper that didn't stand a chance. I shoot and stone it and swim back to the boat and ask Eric if this a nice one. He laughs and say's "hell ya it is". I laughed and told Eric "shooting leopard groupers is so easy, a caveman can do it".
Anyway it turned out to be a really nice one at 19.5 lbs and I also got one of those crafty milkfish that I stoned too.
It was a great trip and can't wait to go back.
The first pic is the leopard grouper and the other is the milkfish.
