ok guys i havnt really even begun to "spearfish" yet but i cant get it off my mind, im wondering first of all wht do i need..i will be free diving in water no deeper than 20' relativley good visibilty, but its tight..(phosphate docks Boca Grande, fl im sure some of u have been there) i know i need a mask and fins which i already have, but im really hoping tht u guys can halp point me in the rite direction with the gun thing..im a little lost.. idk i was there yesterday with my budy just diving aroud w/masks before we started fishing, and its amazing.. any advice would be much appreciated
Chum Bucket would know more than I but from what I've seen of his pics of the phospate docks you'll want a small accurate gun for all those tasty mangrove snapper:toast: I've toyed with getting a 110 euro or a HH, something with one band and a thin shaft for laser shots on sheeps and Go's. Watch for sharks, good luck:smthumbup:

thks man any help on where i can find something like tht or how much it will cost me cause im kinda short on cash
I'd say under $200, maybe ebay or put a post up in the "Member Items" section and somebody might have a used gun they'd part with. Heck, for the docks you could even get away with a pole spear if that's all the deeper you're gonna go. Most everyone I know started off with a pole spear and worked their way up(and sometimes back down :D) Good to see new people getting the bug:toast:

I alot of people including myself own both short and long guns. Tight, low vis warrant's the former, high vis with spooky fish warrants the latter. The short gun would be a good first choice being the one that can be used the most...especially the 'snorkeling' your describing. You can get a used 42 'Biller' or 'Sea Hornet' cheap used...or new for under $200. You can then always buy just a stock to lengthen it.

alright thanks for everyone who replied and gave advic but i think im gonna go with a pole spear, guns are to expensive for me (im 17) and i just dont think the docks would be a good place for one, the visibilty is only 6 or 7 feet, isnt tht prefect leangth for a pole spear, also since i will be free diving for about 45 seconds max i presume, a pole spear just seems simpler, and like it applies to my situation better
Here's a good one from Ray Odor for $60, http://www.spearfishing.cc/Pole%20Spears.htm
