View Full Version : Southern Open Aluminum Black Grouper
hogsniper 06-01-2008, 03:03 PM I just finished fabricating an aluminum 46" Black Grouper pattern. The FSDA has been a huge supporter of the site since we started and I am donating a Black Grouper on behalf of Spearfishing Planet for the prize table. Fish Bone has donated artwork in the past and does incredible work, this is probably not to his level, but I started with some of his designs and took it from there.
It is freehand plasma cut from 1/8" sheet aluminum, ground and sanded, with a final swirl finish. It can go inside or outside, reflects light beautifully, and also casts an awesome shadow if backlit. Mounting brackets can be epoxied to the back for any type of installation and it can be clear powder coated for about $75 if you want to keep it shiny outside.
The image in between the grouper pictures is a low res shot of the 40" hogfish I am designing next.

Sasquatch 06-01-2008, 03:27 PM That is amazing! That'll be a hot prize on the table, for sure.
hogsniper 06-01-2008, 03:45 PM I'm thinking about making a table top base mount out of square aluminum that would be finished to match, it would allow you to display it on a flat table like a buffet.
richt 06-01-2008, 04:36 PM Looks Great Howie!!:toast:

That's a good idea Marcus. Let's let nsearch build the table and glass top, I'll do the fish.
Capt. Bill 06-02-2008, 02:07 AM Jeeps,
Don't worry after a few more years of practicing you will have that walking thing down and you can put the kid-proofing items away. And I am sure by then your little spearo will already be running around the house:smthumbup:
The Collector 06-02-2008, 10:18 AM Howie, that looks awesome man!!

Tin Man 06-21-2008, 08:42 PM Man, that's amazing work! Are your patterns physical, or do you have them drawn out in a way that could be shrunk? Those designs would add a truly unique touch engraved in a custom speargun!
The Collector 06-21-2008, 11:46 PM That is really cool Howie.
Ed Walker 06-22-2008, 12:20 AM Damn nice work Howie!
I am happy to see spearfishing trophies moving upward. Coming from the rod and reel fishing world I have always thought spearfishing tournament trophies (glass) were exceptionally weak. That is one nice piece you have put together there.

Thanks Ed. I am trying to decide whether to donate a hogfish or a black grouper for the St. Pete Open. What do you guys think? I donated a grouper for the Southern, I can do either one for SPO. I am thinking Snook and Tarpon as the next projects, but I have some pieces sold that need to be made first in my elusive spare time before starting on something else.
American Spearit 06-22-2008, 09:06 AM Please, donate the Grouper so i can buy the Hog. That thing is un-freakin -real. Howie, I'll talk to you at the weigh-in about making one. True work of art. I have a blank wall just begging for a piece like that. Great work.

Nsearch had a hot iron brand made for Ken at Deathstick spearguns. I'm not sure where he got it, but it looked great.
richt 06-23-2008, 12:16 AM The grouper looked awesome Howie and it was the second pick off the table! Nice job!
inletsurf 06-23-2008, 08:45 AM That is bad-ass Howie, great work man!

If I could trace one of Howie's pieces I could reduce the size so that it could be burned into the side of a gun.
Gixxer 06-23-2008, 12:45 PM That Hogfish is definately pretty badass. I would definately consider purchasing one of those, and having one of them at the prize table would sure make somebody happy.
Howie, can you make me one of these? Boarhog?
hogsniper 06-24-2008, 04:26 PM Howie, can you make me one of these? Boarhog?
