Went freediving with DonJeffVivo, Austin, and Joey_720 on Tuesday and we had a great day. We had to outrun several thunderstorms but we still had plenty of time to find the fish. Depths ranged from 55-115' and we ended up with a cooler full of muttons, mangroves, hogs, yellow jacks, and a few other additions :D

Me with my 16lb Cubera just after I shot him, gives you an idea of what the conditions were like at times.

A dry picture:

Jeff with a monster permit that he secured after Austin's spear came out. I'm not sure if he ended up weighing it but he had some shoulders on him. BTW, we were MUCH further than 3 miles out from shore, so taking this permit was perfectly legal.

I was stalking a mutton and all of the sudden it got spooked, I looked around and saw this big AJ behind me, got a nice shot through his head that made fighting him with my reel easier.

Wow, that AJ is long and skinny. judging from past ones I have seen from the gulf, the ones that long go around 60lbs or so. How much did that guy weigh? Its just amazing how much different the same fish can look on 2 different coasts.

Way to go, Kris. I'm home again for the Fourth. We definitely need to connect and dive. It was great having you out here in the kelp. Sweet fish.:toast:

Not sure on the weight, likely 35-40lb, what he lacked in height he made up for in girth, he was really wide. I'll have to check out some AJ pics from the west coast, we don't spear them often out here, they're usually small and not as common as in the gulf.

Thanks Andrew, you would have liked the deep diving that we were doing. I'll hold a spot for you on my boat for that July 4th weekend, looking forward to diving with you again.

For sure, man. I'll see if I can't talk my dad into playing boat driver for us. I'm not sure if we'll have much luck, though. He's been having fun lately hooking up on blue marlin and boating wahoo doubleheaders H&L. He's got that whole old man and the sea vibe rockin'.
