I'm hoping to take a freediving course within the next 2 months and was wondering if there is anything I should do to prep to get the most out of the class? I'm in good shape physically both in strength and cardio so I'm good there.

What should I do to be properly prepared?

Also will my cressi gara 2000HF fins be good enough or should I use this as a excuse to buy my first set of fiberglass/cf fins?

I don't know if this will help you.

Sam Holland, a Key West local is hosting a 4 day free dive course at the beginning of next month. I can't remember the instructors names but they are the big dogs of the sport.

If you would like a spot call him. 305-797-6475.

I think he said $690 for the 4 day course.

Your fins are fine, especially if that is what you're comfortable with. The people in my class dove everything from mono's to plastic omers. Serious freedivers are using mono fins these days. No one had any problems or issues hitting their goals with any of the fins. The only thing that caused me and a few other people problems was sinus. It didn't hit me until the last day, so my target dives absolutely sucked. I used my ice blades and didn't have any trouble doing the emergency/rescue work and they are pretty soft fins for pulling up a simulated-blacked out diver from 30ft.

Don't worry about anything really. Avoiding dairy will help limit mucus production. Just stay hydrated and you're good to go.

Your regular gear will be fine. I did hear that there was a PFI course going on in Key West this month which would be cool, especially for you with the free place to stay. They reccomend a light suit (3 nmm) as you will be in the water for a long time on the open water days. You need a watch for sure. Much of your diving is measured from your watch. They mostly use the Suunto and are very good at showing you stuff you didnt know the watch could do. Id suggest a fresh battery even if your seems OK. My watch does weird things long before the bettery goes out completely. It missed one of my deeper dives altogether. :slap:
I got headaches after a few days which was explained to me by Kirk K as a caffiene jones. Seems my body needs its java.
Ill be next door for 2 months starting Aug 2. Lets do some diving. Id take a PFI trained dive buddy over anyone else.

The class in KW was a semi-private class and after a couple of people backed out I was gonna send in my $$$ but the original guys got their sh!t figured out so my friend and I got the boot. Oh well, we're signing up for the Aug 9-12th class in FTL and am looking forward to it.

I already have a D3 and a custom Spiros 3mm wetsuit so I think I got all the gear covered. Thanks for the tip on battery replacement, I'll put that on my prep list.

I'll be sure to let you know when I head down so we can get out together. It will be good practice to get out with some deep divers after just having taken the class. Maybe this time I'll be able to contribute to the cooler! Are you guys gonna do the JLB tourny?

That's a pretty good endorsement.... wife and I are looking into it.
