I was looking up when scallop season starts and ran across a info sheet that incuded info about eating the whole animal.... anybody do it and what did you think?

Scallops on the Half Shell
Mix 1/2 stick of melted butter, 2-3 cloves of
chopped garlic, juice from 1 lime or lemon, 1/2
teaspoon of seasoned salt and a few shakes (if
desired) of your favorite hot sauce.
Remove the top shell from scallop, leaving
whole animal in bottom of shell. Spoon 1/2 tsp.
of butter mixture over scallop, then broil 4” from
heat for 3-4 minutes. Do not overcook.
Note: Some people prefer to scrape away
the darker meats and leave just the white scallop
muscle. Repeat the above recipe.
Fried Scallops
Prepare an egg wash by beating 1 egg in
1/2 cup milk. Season wash to personal
preference with salt and pepper. Dip scallop
meats in egg wash, then coat with any prepared
seafood breading.
Fry quickly (1-2 minutes) in hot grease
(375º). Drain on paper towels.

Most Americans only eat the scallop muscle.
In many other parts of the world the entire
animal is eaten, much like we eat clams and
oysters.

DAWG, I just ate some Ostion, here in Chile, which is Scallops and guess what it was the whole critter, beard and all, it was not too bad, kind of more clam-ie. Of course it was in a empanada frito con queso. Thats with Cheese for you gringos, Oh yeah I am one too.

Hey Grant, last year while cleaning some I tried a couple raw and found them not bad much like a clam and nice and chewy, cooking them whole is much the same also:bounce:

Hmmmmm.....I've about 3 gallon bags of scallop guts in my freezer from a Steinhatchee scallopin' trip that I was saving for chum. Logically, it seems they would be a better eating critter than an oyster.
Maybe when I use them offshore doing some free diving chumming blue water expedition I'll try a couple as they're floating by...fighting the other fish for them and really get the bite stirred up when they fasely realize I'm a competitor (incognito) rather than a predator.:fish:

That's music to my redneck ears...:toast:

it might be time for a crawfish boil. We steamed up a mess of lobster legs last weekend with a shit ton of old bay and that for me was better than the tails!!! Got me into shellfish withdrawals.

Just had a dozen "scallops on the halfshell" while cleaning our scallops from today, they were a hit. I loved them and a few others in our group really enjoyed them as well. I think I will incorporate "the whole animal" into some other recipes as well. They taste very similar to oysters, so if you like oysters you will probrably love these as well...
