What maintenance should be done to an outboard?

When and How often should it be done? At certain hour marks or timetables?

Is there some stuff that you do yoursef and others that you leave to the pros and why?

lower unit oil, fuel filter, check prop shaft for mono, spark plugs, check throttle linkage and cables, water pumps/impellars, decarb/carb cleaning. those are the regular scheduled maintaince that i can think of off the top of my head and everything is something that anyone can do if the have time and are half way mechanically inclined. most of the things can be done anywhere from 50-100 hrs and some are once a year. but if you want to save some money and havent done the maintence before get a shop manual for your motor and it should discuss everything about.

When out diving and not anchoring as well as trolling, you tend to put your boat in and out of gear a lot more. B/c of this I change my gear oil more than recomended. Most of the stuff is easy. Usually if you see it done once or twice it's something you could do yourself.

Two most important things are replacing the water pump impellar and gear oil.
I use synthetic gear lube in mine for the extra lubing protection, its worth the extra money. Neither are really hard to do. The impellar replacement is easier if you have 2 people the unit is a little heavy and is sometimes hard to align when going back togeather.
