I hate it when you're out on the yak for like 8 hours before you spring a leak...

A couple months ago I was diving one of the outer kelp beds in La jolla about a mile offshore when my kayak came undone from the kelp. It drifted for a while and I chased for about 1/4 mile but it began to travel extremely fast as the wind picked up, and with all my gear on there was no way I would have caught it.
So I swam back to the kelp bed and began screaming at the passing boats for about 2 hours. I tried to keep calm but I was really upset for losing it. I figured if I dont signal one of these boats it will be a LONG swim back to shore and I will probably get eaten by something ;) Finally I saw some kayakers in the distance and swam over screaming at them. They didnt hear me until I was like 30 feet away and they looked with their binoculars to where I pointed. One of them said "is that it right over there?"
I turned around and one of the kayakers had dragged it from across the canyon to bring it back to me. I got one hell of a lecture from him and I felt really stupid for doing it but I was so relieved to get it back.
I now carry a small whistle on my weight belt in case I ever get caught in a current or something happens to me while a the islands or offshore.
As divers we can never prepare for everything and I think having a whistle is a fantastic idea for anyone who might be diving.

I'd have to say that he's only medium-core. Hard core would involve him finding the nearest GWS, beating it into submission and riding it into shore.;)

Austin, good idea on the whistle. Just remember to get a pealess/beadless one so it will work in the water.

That would have been a hella good idea...

That's right, Mike. I only came over to this site because of you!

OK, I'm kidding.

That's hella scary right there:eek:

I happen to think it would've been a hella good idea too. The GWS are so thick down there that it wouldn't be a problem finding one either.;)

I'm glad you tritons came over though. Every populace needs its red headed stepchildren:moon::D

That's why we stay up here, dude. At least if I get eaten by a GWS, I'll never see it coming. :yay:

And if nothing else, the club is goofy enough to keep things interesting!

No, he's shipping them to GatKu (Dustin) with next full order, I have to wait a while.

A couple months ago I was diving one of the outer kelp beds in La jolla about a mile offshore when my kayak came undone from the kelp. .
I heard about that at the launch from Gary a older Yakfisher. He's all...."One of your dive buddies lost his yak the other day". He said it happened twice though:eek:.
Lately... Red whistle on bungie around middle of my arm...too much boat traffic.
That guy in the news had better be glad it wasn't winter.
