It was bound to happen...I lined up the drill jig wrong on a gun I am making.

I had it all together and clamped and then realized I needed to remove my trigger before I drilled. I put everything together but aligned the jig wrong. I made all my holes before I realized what had happened. I reset the jig and redrilled the other holes while I thought about the best way to repair the problem. I decided to get some teak plugs until I saw the price on line. Next option was to make my own plugs out of the scrap teak that I never throw away. Local woodcraft had a nice plug cutter for $11

First I marked all the wrong holes with an X

I then setup the drill press with the cutter and a good piece of scrap with some decent grain patterns. I cut all five plugs

Here are the plugs

I then drilled the holes to accept the 1/4 plugs

I then used a wood scrap and mallet to gently knock the plugs in place using some Titebond III glue

I used some painters tape to protect the wood and used a hacksaw blade to cut down the plugs.

Here is the plug after it was cut

Then a final sanding with some 100 grit and all is well, the small holes will be cut into the slot for the line release later.

Oh well....just adds character to the gun! Now I get to harass you about it everytime we go spearing...."Hey look, my gun's got pimples! How'd that happen, Steve???" Hahahahah
I'll just tell everyone who asks that they were screw holes that needed filling from being recycled teak.

Jeff,

If you look close on my gun it has teak plugs in it from its time as a swim platform. Once the oil was applied they almost dissapeared.

Megabeast, I dont think its Jerry Rigging, its an ohh fudge what the hell did I just do...I also wanted to show an easy way to fix it right for those that screw up on their guns also. If it was my gun I would not have been so upset at myself...I even lost a little sleep over it.

Ohh don't get me wrong, it's still what I'd call 'right'. You did good, especially making the plugs because I don't think you can buy teak dowels.

Kahuna, they are a bit of a pain to setup the router. I like having mine though. If it was a dedicated reel gun there would be no need for it.

My last two guns I sold they owners asked me to take them off. They use a slide ring instead
