This is our 1st attempt at video with a little Olympus point and shoot camera. I hope the link will work. My friend Jay (Stranglehold), my son Jason (with camera) and myself stopped at a nice ledge in 50ft out of Johns Pass/ Maderia Beach a few weeks ago. We arrive at the spot and its top to bottom viz, we can see the ledge from the boat, fish swimming every where, a small cobia swims up to the boat, I mean this ledge is alive. I have Jason and Jay roll off for the 1st dive. After about 20 min. they surface at the boat and Jay tells me he marked a spot on the ledge with his safety sausage where a gag had holed up with his shaft in it, he had used a partial fill and was low on air so Jason and I go down and I'm looking for this grouper deep under the ledge but find nothing but a goliath grouper under the ledge. I presume that gag is GG dinner and I start to head back to boat. Out in the distance I see 3 gags all of legal size so I stick the one and string it up. Jasons shooting video so as I try to hold the fish up to the camera it gets away from me. I think, thats great our 1st video and and it captures that smooth move. We had a good day with several other grouper, hogs, and snapper. If the link will not work you can search youtube (grouper that got away)

I think if you post a spearfishing (on scuba) video, you might want to turn off comments because the eurotrash freedivers (who are insanely jealous because they aren't *allowed* by their repressive governments to spear on scuba) will post comments like those on yours.

I was about to unload on those Euro geek's, but I was denied from posting my comments.

That took way too much time to get that fish on the stringer.

chuckd: A knife is another one of those silly tools that you don't need to bring down with you. Just more shit to lose and more drag. If you need to finish off a fish that badly just use your spare shaft or a killspike, or shoot it again.

Less is more! See-Tony Grogan. :o

We are not all professionals. Comments like that can prevent people from posting videos in fear of being critized. Perhaps you could have offered advice to speed up his "stringer time" instead.

In response to jstbecauz's question, I always keep my stringer clipped to me. I've taken crap for that from some people but I like to always be responsible for it and I feel much more in control if it's clipped to me. Plus, it leaves both of my hands free to deal with the fish. After it's strung, I just let it go and swim on.

I have warned you about that! But I guess one or two fish on a stringer....

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa! Whaaaaaaaaaaaa! If anyone doesn't post a sweet spearfishing video because of fear of someone critiquing them, then they are a thin skinned sissy boy... like you! Go slurp the mud off your truck nutz.

FYI, I keep my stringer attached to me unless there are too many fish to carry on it or if I am in a target rich environment then I keep it on the ground, until it's filled.

Advice on stringing faster: Do it faster!!

No I'm not. Every situation where I would've needed a knife I've gotten out of it just fine by calm thinking or using some other sharp pointy object. Most guys carry a sharpened spike for braining fish, well what the hell is my killspike? Like I said before, the day I realized I can snap 200lb test mono leader with my bare hands is the last day I thought I ever needed a knife.

I brain fish with shafts/killspikes. I break mono with my hands and the one time I've gotten wrapped all over was from having a fish go apeshit on the Casablanca and he wrapped other peoples mono from the wreck all over me. I snapped what I could, then when I realized it was all over my tank valve I took of my BC, unwrapped it and put it back on. No problem. What would I have done differently with a knife? I still would've had to take my BC off, or I could reach back there with the knife and start slashing things, hoping I don't gouge a hose.

I don't need a knife in case I need to ditch a fish/shaft because I have a quick release clip on the gun.

Got any other reasons than those that I should need a knife? I don't pry on anything or dig anything while I'm down there either.

also Emil: You're freediving, you might have a little more urgency to cut a line because it could cause you to drown. I on the other hand am on SCUBA so I can take my time nice and calm.

Dude, the video was cool. It looked great and there weren't any 'doofus moments' where the camera was pointed at just sand or upward looking at bubbles. Great camera work!

Of course there are professional spearfisherman. If I guy can get paid to be a surfer/snowboarder, of course you can get paid to shoot fish.

Sorry no videos, if I'm so anal about drag that I don't carry a knife, what makes you think I'm going to bring a gun cam or a grogan cam?

I've never broke or even used 250lb test mono, but I've used the 200, 150, 125, 100, 80, 50, etc. a whooooooole lot. I was talking to my captain one day about the knife and he said 'what are you going to do with that thing?' and I said 'cut line, brain fish, etc.' He said, 'you mean to tell me that you can't break that mono with your bare hands!?' and I said, 'No I don't think I can'. He said, 'give it a try'. So I wrapped it around my bare skin hands, and pulled as hard as I could and it popped alot easier than I thought. It hurt my hands a little, but it broke. I know for a fact I could snap the shit out of it with a little added adrenaline and some gloves on my hands to help the pain. When you deprive mono of it's stretching capabilities, it's alot weaker than you think. Why don't YOU give it a try bub?

As far as getting fish with your bare hands.... I've seen ole' captain Jim NO SHIT noodling multiple 10-12 lb red snapper out of a wreck (Xmas wreck for anyone that knows their shit) that were pressed up in there. I've personally noodled a red grouper, it can be done. I've also grabbed a live jack by the mono hanging out of his mouth, but I didn't land him. He was about 40lbs.

Think outside the box guys, sheesh. Not everything that your dive instructor told you is the truth. Alot of them have never even tested the thresholds of what they teach.
