View Full Version : How much should I offer?
TortugaJames 09-12-2008, 08:03 PM Riffe 2 band gun, used twice, bands are dryrotted but otherwise in new condition. My neighbor busted it out on me because it had been a gift and he just wasn't interested in spearfishing. 5 years old but never really used.
I am thinking $100 cash money, as in one crisp bill.
Will I insult him?
1echo77 09-12-2008, 08:36 PM How long is the gun?
Killer&Griller 09-13-2008, 12:55 AM Are you kidding me? I'm insulted. That's all you are going to give me, "Riffe 2 band gun"??? Ken, throw me a bone and at least tell me if it is wood or not along with the length of the stock. :slap:
What model is it? Obviously not the new Euro series.
Is it a competitor, standard, metal tech or mid handle?
Been out lately? Going out soon?
TortugaJames 09-13-2008, 09:44 AM Sorry, it is a 48, wood stock. I was is a hurry, and I don't know that much about spearguns, so that is all I really have. I is in good shape though, I thought I would get it to have as a loaner gun. I have a Biller 48 for that now too.
Craig, I planning to run on Thursday, but it is a trip designed for a couple of non spearos who want to see steel and sharks. We will drop on some rocks while they shed nitrogen.
I am anxious to go, since I had that Floscan system installed. Cost me a shitload of money, but hopefully it will pay for itself in fuel savings. I ran it around a little the day after Hanna, but I need to run a trip to really check it out.
I have room if you want to come up and dive with us. I owe you a trip or two anyway. You never told me if you liked my book.

An auto pilot will save you that much more along with the flowscan.
I really like that boat and the fuel consumption it gets. You can correct me if I am way off, from the short ride or two I took on it down here, I am going to put it in the 21 1/2 to 24 range for best fuel economy. Let me know how far off I am. Would guess that would put it at about 80-85% load range????

Why not ask him if he is serious about selling it. Then ask what he thinks he would ask for it at a yard sale.
If he goes into the " we paid " routine, tell him you would be willing to post it on here for him if he gave you an idea of what he wanted for it. If it is a good price, buy it yourself, if not, take a pic and post it for him. If the price needs to come down over time, at least you have the inside track on where he wants to be or what he will take for it in the end.
As for the book, still haven't read it yet.
As happy as you have been with the boat and getting my happy @ss to commit to driving up there, I think I am charging you like 4-6 trips for that gem. I have been thinking lately that I should have pulled the trigger myself.
I am only coming to kill fish, lots of them.
Are you going to put me on spots like this from last week? We stopped at one of my hog holes. :D
Don't tell TJ, I haven't taken him to one of these yet.
Sasquatch 09-13-2008, 06:06 PM I didn't even know spots like that existed. Well, other than the NC aquarium.

21-24 range? Are you talking rpm's?
Deere has 2400rpm as the max turn on that engine and cruise at any speed more than 200 rpm less than max. I may be a hair underpropped because with a clean bottom it will turn close to 2500.
I have been running around 2000 making 19-20 knots just because it sounds like that speed is her "groove". That is about 75% load. You are on track there.
It will be interesting to see how close I am. The floscan was showing me 16gph at 2100 rpms and 21 knots. That is about 1.5 mpg. Where I think the floscan will save me is not carrying more fuel than I need because I will know how much I have left.
I was hoping to find a sweet spot close to 2nmpg.
Oh and on a final note, although I do love the boat it has taken me this long to get the bugs worked out. It ain't been all fun and games.:slap:
threw-er-back 09-14-2008, 03:13 PM Daa-Yumm..nice stringer..
hurricanebk 09-14-2008, 07:11 PM i have the exact gun (mines a year old) but its definitely worth 100 bucks, put new bands on it (3 x 9/16 is what i use) and you have yourself one of the best mass produced guns in that size range imo.
Killer&Griller 09-14-2008, 08:19 PM 21-24 range? Are you talking rpm's?
No, I was talking knots verses what you were going to cruise at verses the load percentage in the 80ties.
As far as finding the "sweet spot", it is at the low to mid 80ies on the load, has nothing to do with the flowscan. Your "sweetspot" is your wallet and fuel costs that you want to achieve. Run at 1800 - 1875 range to get a little closer to your 2.0 I would guess. Then again, you have to run the JD, not putt with it.
Throw some of that weight foward so you don't have to tab so much.
Tell TJ to stop bringing so much gear and those big tanks. :D
Don't buy fuel depending on the trip. You never know what kind of situation you will run into. I burn half a tank on each trip. Boat is full everytime I pull out of port.
At the very least use the cave diving motto. 1/3 1/3 1/3
stevemc1 09-15-2008, 09:40 AM I agree with that statement about buying fuel for the trip. If the weather gets rough, your mileage can be cut in half or worse. Then you're really screwed! Always have a reserve. I did that once and it was real nice and we went all over checking new spots and ran out 5 miles from port. Luckily has Sea-Tow and they brought me some gas. Check it at a full load of fuel, gear, ice and people, that is where most of us run at. At least start out at.
