i just got a JBL D8... i just got into spearfishing and i normaly use it from the shore here in Miami... is this a a good gun for a newb or would you guys recommend something else???

Im new to this as well and bought the JBL Woody 48" Magnum. Works fine for me, but I'm sure others would recommend others. Good luck

New guy here also with the JBL 48. Works for me (although I may not know any better :awink:)

Thats a fine gun to use as a first gun. If you can see good enough and it doesnt feel too long, your good. If visibility reduces you might have to go to something smaller. Where I'm at very rarely couold you use a 48" gun off the beach. Vis doesnt allow it.

One of my first "real" guns (before that I shot home-made guns, which were seriously flawed) was a Voit which, I believe, was the precursor of JBL. It was big, heavy, and it sank. But it was also virtually indestructible: I had it some 40 years ago, yet today somebody in Vietnam (my native country) is still shooting it... Over time though, and with a little more sophistication, you might wish to move up to something with better range and accuracy, and which does not tax your arm as much on long dives as it did mine.
