View Full Version : Spearfishing Game-Fish in Wisconsin...One man's dream!

This Idea I've had for many years has once again been "brought up" on a different web-site...
I think it might be better received on THIS website as this website is bigtime into protecting, promoting and growing the sport of spearfishing. Winter is coming...Here in Wisconsin they are LONG... I'm hoping to EVENTUALLY get enough like minded individuals together to petition or lobby the state to allow skindivers to spear certain gamefish species. Some think I'm crazy & that it CANNOT be done. That we'd be "knocked out of the air" by hook & line fishermen. I think it can - Key thing being we HAVE to WORK TOGETHER!!! Regardless of our age, race, gender, sexual preferences, etc.

Regarding my post from last fall - There was some VERY good feedback...Especially by a cool fellow who calls himself "Spaghetti"...But as I said I'm now banned from that particular website because myself and a VERY FEW other individual's don't see "eye to eye" on certain issues...Like me being an "outspoken" conservative Republican - And not putting up with "double standards"...So be it. (I bet they're NOT N.R.A. Member's!) They're loss - However I am still willing to fight for "thier rights" since I also love spearfishing.

Here is the post...Or a "copy" of it -

Your opinions please...CONCERNING LOBBYING THE STATE OF WISCONSIN and the D.N.R. (Department of Natural Resources)FOR UNDERWATER SCUBA AND SKINDIVING GAMEFISH SPEARING TAGS. COULD IT BE A POSSIBILITY? I WOULD'NT EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START! Would it be worth the time try to lobby the state for different regulations regarding the spearing of certain gamefish species?

Surely UNDERWATER spearing of King Salmon could be allowed at least. They (King/Chinook Salmon) die after thier fruitless spawning here in Lake Michigan anyways. No NATURAL reproduction whatsoever for them...In Wisconsin anyways.

Also it would be really cool to be able get a few TAGS for other gamefish like Walleye or Northern's. Even if it was just ONE or TWO per year or something - AGAIN - WITH A TAG. (Just a thought) Regulated gamefish spearing could/would also create some BADLY needed revenue for the D.N.R. - And I'm sure our waters would'nt suddenly become flooded with UNDERWATER spearfishermen/skindivers. And again...we're only talking a few tags or so...PER YEAR!!!! Having to TAG a fish once it has been taken into posession would be about the ONLY easy way to prevent possible over-zealous poaching. I for one would happily apply for and buy FISH TAGS every year. I would also gladly report anyone seen with an UNTAGGED/speared fish.

Do you guys/gals think I would be wasting my time? Or do you think we should remain quiet here in Wisconsin and just be glad we can spear what we can? We don't want to lose what we do have by "stirring the pot" either. There are a handfull of states that allow UNDERWATER SPEARING for certain species of gamefish like Walleyes and Northern Pike.

I can see how SOME people (mainly beginners) would possibly spear an undersized fish...But oh well, That could be O.K. as long as the fish was taken into posession and TAGGED...Most guy's probably would'nt use thier FISH TAG on a smallish fish anyways. I'd imagine that most tags would be used on decent eating sized fish OR a trophy.

Wha'dya guys think...Am I dreaming...Is it a dumb idea...Or both!!!!

Have you tried passing this idea by someone in the DNR? I think its a great idea but you may get some opposition from the rec. h&l groups up there. I spend a lot of time in Wausaukee where my family has a place and would love to go into our lake after a northern. I doubt they would allow you to go after Muskees but the Salmon sounds like a good idea. My brother in law's dad is with the DNR, I will try this idea on him and see what his feedback is on the issue and get back to you.

Thanks sremsen...

Not yet - Working on that though...Thanks for your input! Looking forward to more. One of the first things I would think is putting together some sort of an "alliance" with other spearfishermen who wish to spear certain gamefish in Wisconsin. Maybe even just in certain lakes. I myself would have NO desire to spear any Largemouth or smallmouth bass. I can see where certain species could or would be off limits - Especially at certain times of the year.

Presently I am looking at putting together a list of "other" states that allow spearing of gamefish. And getting thier states views on the subject. Maybe forming the "alliance's" with them...Or certain spearfishing organizations.

There is also a few guy's I know of that are toying around talking to senators, congressmen, DNR and the like.

I have to buy a fishing license to "underwater" spearfish here in Wisconsin - yet I don't have the same "rights" under the law as hook & line guys do. I can't even spear a catfish!

I think the "TAG" proposal and a "seperate" underwater spear-fishing license is about the ONLY way it will be possible. That option will allow close regulation - and net the state more money. Most spearfishermen I know also do a bit of hook & line fishing on occasion. So we would actually be buying TWO licenses!

Ossamas wishWhile running from American troops, across the desert, Ossama stumbles across an ornate jar. Curiously he opens it and a beautiful female genie comes out."Oh master, thank you for freeing me. I will grant you a wish""I don't need any wish from a female,” he said haughtilyThis anoys the genie but she insists that he make a wish."Oh very well. I want to wakeup in the morning with three American white women."So the next morning he woke up in bed with Lorena Bobbit, Tanya Harding and Hillary Clinton. His dick was cut off, his legs were broke and he had no medical insurance.
