View Full Version : snorkel selection

In the past, I have paid minmal attention to what type of snorkel I use. My main guide to selection has been to get the cheapest, simpelest snorkel I can find that dosent trap bubbles. Recently, while on a flight back from Hawaii, I read an advertisment from a place called snorkle bobs. they were touting a new snorkle designed to reduce the void space in snorkels. they described one of the side affects of to long a snorkel as being a headache, due to in effect recycling the air generasted by void space in the snorkel. probably would have disregarded the whole thing, and moved on to the next gadget catologe in the seatback...but it made me think. Sometimes I do get a pretty intense headache after a long day of diving:circle:. (I try to stay pretty hydrated throught the day, so I dont think thats the issue). While helping another board member cut out a WSB earlier this season, I noticed he had a very short snokel. My main thought at the time was "that must be a pain in the but to keep dry" but if it would eleviate the ocasional headache, that would be worth it. I might go shopping for a short stubby snorkel sometime in the near future. Any thoughts?

While I am certainly not going to call BS on the subject, I would be more willing to bet that your headaches are caused by short surface intervals between dives. Do you monitor your surface intervals, and if so, what are they in comparison to your bottom times?

When I started paying attention to this detail and sticking to a double my bottom time surface interval, I have not had any headches.

How about cutting an inch off of yours :D I know the feeling of reluctance to mess with something made to specs but I do it all the time. For example a few days ago I sanded off the logo "US Divers" from a cheap snorkel that I use. I used very fine automotive sand paper, the snorkel remained smooth and you can't tell there was a logo there. It was the only thing about the snorkel I didn't like. I'm sure if I wanted to shorten it would come out fine.

Boyd,

Even though you say you stay hydrated, I still think it might be dehydration. I've dove with you and know that you're an animal when it comes to staying out. Try some gatorade and or beer. If you only drink water, then you could piss and sweat out too much salts.

Oh, just had another thought. Maybe your mask strap is too tight and squeezing your big ass noggin?

I do monitor them pretty closley. When I am in hunt mode its usually between 50-1:00 down, with a solid 1:30 between dives...and I move pretty slow, usually in the top 20 feet of water. Deeper than thirty feet or so and I give it 3:00 betwwen dives...although, my d3 battery is due for a change, that could be possible. I try to mantain a pretty conservative proffile.
Nate, I might have to try the gatorade thing. I do try and drink a lot beetween spots, but its all water I pilfer from work. I try and keep the mask pretty lose.

Do you have a link or reference to the info? It seems like an interesting subject and I would be curious to find out more.

I did find this:

I concur completley. No way I would spend 47 bucks on a funny looking snorkel. I do remeber the freediving crowd over on deeprblue having a discusion on the subject of void space in snorkels...but I cant rember if headaches were a symptom or not. If snorkel bob says its true:fro:, well you can take it to the bank:liar:

I think Spinal Tap is right, and you just need to drink more beer. I don't ever recall getting a headache when I've been drinking beer - at least not until the next day. Ask Snorkel Bob if he has a beer bong snorkel.

Boyd,

:rofl:I think that is more like it.
Boyd, the only way to solve this problem is to start drinking your own urine. Let me know how it goes.

Dehydration can really screw you up over a long day of diving. I think I suffer from that on ocassion. That being said after seeing Freedro and Seacrecher both use the Riffe Stable, I have switched to that snorkel also and gotta say I totally love it. It has low internal air volume, so I get much less drymouth, and after spitting it out, when you come to the surface, and go to put it back in your mouth, it has already purged itself and full of fresh air.

Interesting thread, I think the headaches are caused by having too much CO2 in your system. I think this snorkel will solve all of your problems, a little pricey though.

Once, a long, long time ago, I tried it. Didn't work very well

^ The Omer Zoom Pro - Beer Bong Edition. Quite possibly the best Omer product made :D.

The regular model of the Zoom Pro Soft snorkel is my all-time favorite for non-imbibing related activites.

I've been using the Sporasub samurai snorkel ever since I got one at sport chalet on sale for like $5. I like it alot so far. Simple J-tube, stays in place with the clip, clears easy and for $5 I really can't complain.

I use the same, mine wasn't on sale though, $15, still not too bad. Sometimes its the plain old simple things that work best.

That's what I've got too. The only reason that I didn't lik eit was that the little knobs on the mouthpiece jabbed into the roof of my mouth. So I trimmed them, and now it's all better.
