Default First NZ Report

My Fellow Spearos,

I have finally ventured under the surface in the waters of New Zealand.

I went with Kane (www.extremefreedom.co.nz) and some of his mates. We went out to this volcanic island in search of kingfish, snapper, and teraki. The kingfish and snapper were no where to be found, and I only spotted one terakihi. So like any Gulf coast Floridian would do, I unleashed a little red tide and shot up the local population of moki and porae. I decided to keep it to one of each species, so I came out with a blue moki, copper moki, porae, and one that I forget the name of. And also like a true Floridian, I froze my azz off.

All in all it was a great dive and good start to the season. I'll be posting more and more as the blood starts flowin!

Last pic is from a kahawai flyfishing session this morning at the mouth of a river that flows right into the ocean.

It's "Sweet As" down in NZ. I'll get some more stuff up as soon as it happens.

KK, water temps weren't really that bad at around 13.5 C, but the cold wind was rough when you got out of the water. Vis was about 13 meters.

Jordan, I tried to jump off the plane into the bay, but it would have taken too long to dig my speargun out of the cargo hold...

If the weather holds, we might be doing an after-work kingfish hunt - cross your fingers!

I'm glad you're getting in the water. I assume you didn't do the tournament you were talking about. That cold water sure would take some getting used to. I do love the pictures. Later..

Who knew they had Bermuda Chubs there too. Quit posting these little fish and get your butt out there to shoot big Bluefin tuna.

What's the good is sorta knowing someone in New Zealand if he's shooting Bermuda Chubs?

Acusations of chub shooting will not be tolorated!!!!!!

Yeah, they look like chubs, but they are the typical reef fish around here. They aren't that bad to eat either. You can't see the porae, but it looks like a big, silver pinfish .

I just got an email from a buddy - some guys went out this past weekend and shot some majorly huge kingfish, then pulled a bunch of crayfish (lobster) - niether of which were around at the same spot we were only a week ago.

Give it time boys....The killing will soon commence.

Nice Avatar, Ren! Bruce said that he worked you PFI boys at the Hyde...

The tourney has been postponed, so I'm still in.

He said he worked us huh? He would have been on the same level if i hadn't been busting the sand. Oh you mean killing fish he worked us. Yeah, he went down on top of two fish and caught them off guard a couple more times then myself. Maybe even less considering Ashley and I were sharing a gun and one sure kill went to a safety still on issue. I'll take at least some of the credit for Bruce's performances that day. You know he has to out do the rookey. Seriously though he was getting it done.
