I saw this on another forum and was wondering if anyone has used it or has it on their boat.
Stay Afloat watch this video, it's way more descriptive than the website Stay Afloat Promo - YouTube |

Thanks Matt, After watching the video I'm going to order some. Cheap enough to have some peace of mind, and beats a bucket!

Wow! That stuff appears to be bad ass!! Much easier than a wooden plug to get something under control and give you a minute to think. I wonder if it has a shelf life. I am definetly going to order some or check to see if West Marine carries it like stayafloat website says.

I used something similar one time when I had a job to do. The wax ring you buy when replacing toilets. Worked pretty good, but wasn't as dense as this stuff. Almost, but not quite. They did have to put a pretty thick glob in the one open seacock. Still good stuff to hold back water pressure.
I was a DC man in the Navy (Damage Control/ Fire Fighting) in charge of a Damage Control Locker on board an Aircraft Carrier. We would have Spools of this shit called oakum. Kind of like a rope/twine which was somewhat tarry and sticky. Various sizes wooden plugs pieces of various sizes cut wood and such. Some BIG plugs too. Figure that in casualty situations very large caliber artillery, torpedoes, or some other explosion just created that hole in your boat. You're gonna need a BIG plug. The idea being to find as large a plug or piece of wood needed and then wrap the shit out of it with the oakum to stuff into the hole. sounds caveman primitave now. In the true reality, that is why ships have water tight hatches, doors, and bulkheads. Kind of like applying a tourniquet. Hadn't thought about that shit for a long time. |

Divebudz, I used to work on big boats, and until the 80s, big boats were wood. Many still are. I used oakum to caulk planked boats hulls. Mainly big Chris-Crafts. Plywood boats like sportfish didnt need this. We would use a scraper made from a file, you bend the tang, and scrape out the old oakum with the tang, scrape it better, and if it just needed caulking, we would paint the crevice with red lead, flat brownish red paint, and kind of lightly tap in the oakum with a caulking chisel, just to set it, which is slightly curved and wide, some are not so wide. Then you tap, tap, and tap some more until it sounds hard then do do the whole crevice, you paint it with more red lead, let it dry, then bottom paint it if underwater or if topsides match the hull. The good old days! I wouldnt own a wood boat. Your story of oakum brought back some memories.
